More than 75 members and guests gathered via interactive video-conference for the SEAMASS 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting on May 5.

Outgoing president Doug Antholz, SE kicked off the evening with a well-received social half-hour of brief small-group breakout sessions that facilitated casual conversation and connection. He then welcomed all participants; recapped a robust year of programming; and thanked all Board and Committee members for their service and dedication to SEAMASS.

Incoming president Lisa Davey, PE presented Doug with a plaque in honor of his service, and praised his consistent leadership and commitment to moving SEAMASS forward throughout the pandemic. Boston-based journalist Doug Most, author of The Race Underground: Boston, New York, and the Incredible Rivalry that Built America's First Subway, presented the fascinating story of the birth of subways in America. The event featured a raffle of three books, signed and personalized by Doug Most. The lucky winners were: Lida Afsari, Yelena Bronshvayg, and Anthony McHugh.
Message from SEAMASS President Lisa Davey, PE
It is a great honor to be elected President of SEAMASS for the 2021-2022 year, and I thank you for your trust in me to lead our organization.

A major aspect of our SEAMASS mission is to provide continuing education and networking opportunities to our members. Thanks to the quick pivot by our Board last year under the leadership of Past President Doug Antholz, we maintained our ability to fulfill this mission with monthly virtual presentations.
This year, as we shift to new state of normal, SEAMASS remains committed to delivering educational opportunities via a mix of in-person events where we can mingle, network, and reconnect, as well as virtual events that enable participation of those who are further away, or unable to commit to half-day seminars. Virtual events also allow us to draw from a larger pool of thought leaders from across the country to present a variety of topics.

Our goal this year is to not only continue to grow our membership but to increase the diversity of our organization. We aspire to identify champions to engage with the SE3 initiative and join our SEAMASS Diversity and Inclusion Committee to advocate for the inclusion and advancement of under-represented groups within the Structural Engineering Community via outreach and educational programs.

We also seek to increase engagement and provide opportunities for members to perform active roles within our organization. We will seek members to assist the Board with various initiatives throughout the year such as program and event planning, task forces, and committees. If you'd like to become more involved with SEAMASS committees or volunteer opportunities please reach out to me or one of our board members. I also encourage you to take the brief survey in this issue.

I ask that if you are a senior leader of your firm, please support and encourage your staff at all levels to become active SEAMASS members. Share our newsletters and program announcements with your entire office and support those who wish to participate. I ask our SEAMASS Young Members Group (YMG) to continue to promote the benefits of membership to those early in their careers. A healthy YMG will ensure a strong and enduring future for SEAMASS.

The strength of our organization comes from members, and I look forward to engaging with you over this next year and accomplishing great things together.

Sincerely,
Lisa Davey, PE | SEAMASS President

Call for Projects: SEAMASS Spotlight Opportunities
SEAMASS will once again feature spotlight projects designed by engineering firms in Massachusetts. All SEAMASS members are encouraged to submit projects for the Project Spotlight feature section of SEAMASS News, as well as promotion on the SEAMASS website, or potentially as part of a SEAMASS Projects Spotlight Seminar.

Projects may range from small to large; be located anywhere in the world; and designed by structural engineers in the SEAMASS region. Of particular interest are projects that attract attention from the structural engineering community, engaging them to learn about a project. For example, spotlight projects should include relatively unique details, such as unusual structural, construction, or architectural features, or forward-thinking structural design approaches and detailing solutions.

To submit a project, please contact SEAMASS Vice President Bassem Almuti
