Message from SEAMASS President Lisa Davey, PE
2022 is off to a great start and your Board of Directors and I are eager to keep up the momentum. With your support, SEAMASS provided great value to our members and industry in 2021.

Since last Fall, SEAMASS has successfully:
  • Planned & hosted 14 Professional Development Webinars featuring 18 presenters

  • Filled 755 virtual "seats" at webinar-series events with 363 participants from MA and & beyond

  • Distributed 646.5 PDHs of SEAMASS or NCSEA-Diamond Certified participation

  • Increased individual memberships and welcomed 6 new annual sponsors
We continued to enhance our successful webinar platform to connect presenters, registrants, and sponsors from across our region. Based on member feedback, we plan to transition to a hybrid model of webinars and in-person events going forward. I’m happy to announce that our first in-person program of the year is in April!

In this issue, we share new events and recap recent ones; profile a member; highlight member news and how our members have shared their expertise globally to preserve earthquake damaged buildings; share Young Member Group updates; call for applications for the SEAMASS 2022 Engineering Student Scholarship; congratulate our 2021 Scholarship winner; promote career opportunities, provide updates from industry peers such as BBRS and NCSEA; and welcome new members and sponsors.

The strength of our organization comes from members. Our volunteer directors and committee members strive to produce quality professional development opportunities, award scholarships to aspiring engineers, and serve the community and industry solely with funds from annual SEAMASS memberships, sponsorships, and event-participant fees. Please invite your non-member industry peers to join SEAMASS, or upgrade your current $50 annual member investment to become a sponsor.

Thank you for doing your part to maintain our vibrant organization and industry.
Sincerely,
Lisa Davey, PE | SEAMASS President

SEAMASS Member Profile
Christine McLaughlin, PE
Christine is a structural engineer with HNTB in Boston, as well as Event Coordinator with the SEAMASS Young Members Group. She has five years of experience with bridge design, inspection, and rating services, in addition to miscellaneous building design. Christine earned her B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Northeastern University with a Structural concentration.

She answered the questions below, so we can know her better. Thank you, Christine, for your contributions to SEAMASS and the Structural Engineering profession!

Why did you join SEAMASS? I was invited by the YMG Chair at the time through a different industry organization event. I had been interested in networking more with other structural engineers and growing my knowledge, as I don't get much building experience in my current role.

What are your goals as an engineer?  I’d like to broaden my expertise. I’ve worked on a variety of projects, but I appreciate the different experiences of working on small and large projects with different scopes and requirements.

In the engineering field, what accomplishments are you most proud of? Working with outreach groups to encourage young women and girls to get involved in engineering and providing support to them through mentoring. It’s one of the things that I’m extremely passionate about and brings me so much joy!

Describe a project that you’re involved with. I’m currently working on a bridge replacement. The fun part is, the old bridge is a 38-year-old “temporary” bridge built by the Army Corps as a trial for a river crossing. It’s also my first project working with a landscape architect. We’ve had interesting conversations about... READ MORE

Members' Expertise Saves Earthquake-Damaged Buildings in Haiti
The magnitude 7.2 earthquake centered near the city of Les Ceres in Haiti on Aug 14, 2021 caused widespread damage in a country still recovering from a 2010 devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Through Tighe & Bond, Catholic Charities sought volunteers to provide structural assessments for the charity’s structures in Les Ceres.

SEAMASS Members Doug Antholz, SE of Tetra Tech and David Schnerch, PE of Wiss, Janney, Elstner met via video conference with David Murphy, PE of Tighe & Bond, who was in Haiti as part of the earthquake response that included structural assessment of multiple critical buildings including Les Caye Cathedral, multiple churches, facilities buildings, highway bridges, and pedestrian bridges.

Cellular service in Haiti did not support extended video calls, so the team performed live assessments while reviewing pictures. This enabled the engineers in Massachusetts to direct the field team where to look and what to review, to facilitate a structural review process that allowed them to provide guidance for short-term stabilization, and determine areas that required review for the long-term renovation of each structure. As a result, several structures that might otherwise have been torn down were preserved so future engineers can provide in-person repair guidance.
