Our state was well-represented at the 2018 NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit from Oct 24-27 in Chicago, IL, where more than 600 professionals from across the nation convened to advance the industry and honor those who dedicate their lives to improving it.  SEAMASS member participants included Bassem Almuti, Nikki Baldvins, Chris Barlow, Craig Barnes, Michael Fillion, Aaron Ford, Chelsea Hoplin, Kara Kea, Elisa Livingston, and Ted Saltz.

In addition to benefitting from practical education, a dynamic trade show, and peer networking, participants gathered to recognize recipients of the Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards and NCSEA Special Awards, which honor members that provide outstanding service and commitment to the organization.

Congratulations to Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger for winning the Most Outstanding Project award within the category, “New Buildings $20M to $100M” for their project, The Baha’i Temple of South America in Sanitago, Chile.

Congratulations to our SEAMASS Young Members Group for earning the 2018 NCSEA YMG of the Year Award , presented at the Summit. The award recognizes the Young Member Groups that have had the greatest impact on their young members, member organization, and communities over the past year. Our YMG was one of four nominees considered for top honors (others were New York, Utah, and Washington).

2017-18 YMG President Robert Kane, PE explained, “ We are proud to have the NCSEA select our organization as the top YMG in the country, recognizing our collective efforts to coordinate site visits, seminars, social outings, and student outreach events over the past year. I couldn't be more excited for our YMG, and for SEAMASS as a whole. None of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our YMG Board Members, and the support of the SEAMASS Board of Directors. Thank you all for your contributions, and I look forward to the year ahead, under the capable direction of incoming YMG President Brian Post, PE.”

Chris Barlow, EIT of Cannon Design and Ted Saltz, PE of Thornton Tomasetti were awarded scholarships to participate in the Summit, based on their winning essay submissions to NCSEA.

Member Profile: Meet Chris Barlow, EIT
Chris Barlow, EIT is a Structural Engineer 1A with one year of experience in structural engineering. He currently works for Cannon Design in Boston, Massachusetts, and earned his Master of Architectural Engineering degree from Pennsylvania State University.
He serves on the YMG Board as Student Liaison, and earned a scholarship to participate in the 2018 NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit in Chicago.
Thank you, Chris, for your contributions to SEAMASS and the Structural Engineering profession!
Q: Why did you join SEAMASS?
A: I joined SEAMASS to continue my education as a structural engineer and to network with others in the profession. SEAMASS offers a variety of resources for equipping young engineers like myself with industry knowledge beyond a higher education degree, such as site visits and study sessions. Structural engineers also face many unique challenges every day with solutions far outside the box of common industry knowledge. In those instances, having a community of creative thinkers surrounding me becomes very useful.

Q: Describe a project that you’re involved with.
A: At Cannon Design, I am involved with a number of very interesting projects. One particular project, a 76,000 SF athletic center near Washington, DC, really packed in a lot of innovation and unique features for its relatively small size. What I am most proud of are the 64 round, tapered, architecturally exposed, glulam columns, sloped in two planes, supporting the 102’ long steel trusses over the gymnasium.

Q: As an engineer, what accomplishments are you most proud of?
A: During my final year at Penn State, my thesis project won first place first place for structural engineering, as well as the first place overall award from the Professional Engineers in Private Practice of Pennsylvania. I worked extremely hard on that project, but the amount of knowledge I gained in such a short time was very rewarding.

Q: How do you spend your free time?
A: In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, and cooking. Recently, I finished the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy by Cixin Liu. My favorite places that I have traveled so far are Bangkok and Tokyo. My favorite dish to cook is Thai Red Curry, using a mortar and pestle I picked up in Thailand.
Call For Member Projects
All SEAMASS members are encouraged to submit projects for the Project Spotlight feature section of SEAMASS News, as well as promotion on the SEAMASS website, or potentially as part of a SEAMASS Projects Spotlight Seminar.

Projects may range from small to large; be located anywhere in the world; and designed by structural engineers in the SEAMASS region. Of particular interest are projects that attract attention from the structural engineering community, engaging them to learn about a project. For example, spotlight projects should include relatively unique details, such as unusual structural, construction, or architectural features; or out-of-the-box structural design approaches and detailing solutions.

If you have a project to submit for recognition, please contact Bassem Almuti at balmuti@cannondesign.com .
