Message from SEAMASS President Nate Roy, PE
I hope you had a wonderful summer and are eagerly anticipating the Fall season. I am honored to serve as 14th President of SEAMASS and to kick off our 2023-2024 year.
First and foremost, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our outgoing President, Bassem, for his commitment, hard work, and dedication to SEAMASS over the past 11 years in his roles as YMG Chair, NCSEA Delegate, Secretary, Treasurer, VP, and President. Bassam isn’t leaving a hole, but an example of what makes a successful organization.
As the board and I look ahead to planning this year’s programs we aspire to continually find opportunities for our community to share, network, grow and give back. If you have ideas or suggestions regarding the programs and events you would like SEAMASS to organize or look to contribute your time and expertise by presenting or serving on one of our committees, please reach out to me or contact us at secretary@seamass.org. Also, I hope you can join us at our Fall kick-off social on Thursday, September 28 where we can connect and discuss this coming year.
A core goal of our organization to inspire and mentor future generations and emerging leaders. One way we do this is through the SEAMASS Young Members Group (YMG). I ask that you encourage your colleagues to join SEAMASS and the YMG, and be active in the events and programs. Additionally, please share our newsletters and program announcements within your office and support those interested in participating.
Your active participation within the SEAMASS community is greatly appreciated. I look forward to connecting with you this coming year and hope to see you at our upcoming events. Thank you for being an integral part of SEAMASS.
Sincerely,
| |
Nathan Roy, PE | SEAMASS President

Eric Johnson, PE
Eric is an Associate with LeMessurier in Boston. His professional experience includes projects involving commercial lab buildings, K-12 and higher education buildings, renovations, and government buildings with protective design. As a new director on the SEAMASS Board, his goals include advancing the mission of the Structural Engineering Engagement and Equity (SE3) initiative in MA and working toward increased mass timber construction and production in New England.
| |
Eric earned his M.S. in Structural Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Tufts University. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in MA. He has answered the questions below, so we may get to know him better.
Why did you join SEAMASS? I joined SEAMASS at the beginning of my career for the construction site tours and social events organized by the Young Member Group. But I’ve stuck around for all the informative seminars and networking opportunities, too! Most of my time so far has been spent with the YMG, and the great group of young engineers who regularly participate in events. Being a member of SEAMASS and the YMG gives me a sense of camaraderie in the profession beyond my company. It’s a great way to meet other engineers and it shows students and entry level engineers that our profession is thriving here in Massachusetts.
As an engineer, what are you most proud of? I’m proud that I can... READ MORE

WEBINAR: Wildfire Resilient Construction for Building Enclosures
Presenter: Robin Urquhart, M.Sc, Ph.D
Building Science Consultant | RDH Building Science
| |
|
Wildfires present significant risk to residential structures across North America. Wildfire risk mitigation of the structure can be considered fundamentally an enclosure issue, yet it is rarely part of the design brief or considered in projects.
Increased wildfire severity and frequency is prompting government at all levels to review wildfire construction legislation & reccommendations. Engineers have a duty to the public interest to raise the issue of wildfire mitigation for relevant projects.
| |
Participants will learn when to consider wildfire risk and mitigatiom considerations from a building enclosure perspective.
Participants Earn 1.0 SEAMASS or NCSEA Diamond-Certified PDH

NCSEA Existing Buildings Committee and
SEAMASS SEER Building Safety Committee Updates
Contributed by Michael Fillion, PE | Principal, Fillion Group, Inc.
Chair, NCSEA Existing Buildings Committee
| |
NCSEA's Existing Buildings Committee recently formed a Building Assessments Group. The initial goals will be to provide practicing structural engineers with resources for performing buildings assessments and a series of educational webinars. The group along with other NCSEA leaders is actively engaged with ICC’s Guideline Development Committee for the proposed guideline for building assessments. ASCE SEI has also begun to form a committee to update their Guideline for Structural Condition Assessment of Existing Buildings SEI/ASCE 11-99. Please contact me if you are interested in becoming involved with the NCSEA Existing Buildings Committee.
|
In May, SEAMASS initiated the Structural Engineering Emergency Response (SEER) / Building Safety Committee. The committee’s goal is to maintain a roster of trained second responders that provide trained professionals to government agencies overwhelmed by large-scale disasters. It will also focus on providing building safety education valuable to individuals making construction field visits and providing assessments to damaged buildings. The committee is coordinating efforts with the MA Office of Public Safety and Inspections and will train approx 30 building officials and inspectors at the Post-Disaster Building Safety Assessment course on October 16.
SEAMASS Young Members Group Updates
The SEAMASS Young Members Group (YMG) continues to grow and enhance the SEAMASS community by coordinating events and programs designed to support young engineering professionals. Recent & upcoming events are summarized below.
| |
2023 Steel Bridge Competition
Several SEAMASS YMG members attended the (SEAMASS-Sponsored) ASCE Steel Bridge Competition at Northeastern University following a joint Earth Day event with BSCES YMG on April 22. The annual event attracts university students from around the Northeast Region (New England and Canada) to compete in a variety of civil engineering events, including the Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions. Steel Bridge participants design and fabricate steel structures, and assemble them within a time limit, loaded to test deflections, sometimes to failure!
YMG President Christine McLaughlin, PE served as a mentor for the NU team, and several industry engineers participated as judges during the competition.
