Infant Formula Shortage Guidance

Due to the infant formula shortage,

the New Jersey WIC Program has added new sizes of powdered NJ WIC standard formulas.

The following are the new sizes that are permitted:

  • Enfamil Infant Powder - 29.4 oz
  • Enfamil Gentlease Powder - 27.7 oz
  • Enfamil Prosobee Powder - 20.9 oz

Participants will be able to choose from sizes, depending on store availability.

Larger cans of Enfamil Infant and Gentlease will count as 2 smaller cans. Larger cans will be allowed until September 30, 2022.

Alternative Options to Address Infant Formula Shortage

Sister to Sister logo

Although WIC is currently providing additional options for purchasing formula, it is still very hard to find any formula on the shelves.

An alternative for those who may be both breastfeeding and formula feeding is to try to increase their breast milk supply. This can include things such as changing diet and daily routines (more frequent feeds).

For those who may have recently stopped breastfeeding, there is also the option of trying to re-lactate.

Now more than ever it is important that breastfeeding is encouraged and supported, as the formula shortage will be an issue for some time to come.
