Learn the Signs,

Act Early

Ambassador


Deepa Srinivasavaradan, Director of Early Childhood Initiatives at SPAN is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” (LTSAE) Ambassador for New Jersey since 2014. Deepa has been selected to serve another two-year term from 2022-2024.


CDC’s LTSAE program aims to improve early identification of children with autism and other developmental disabilities so children and families can get the services and support they need.


Act Early Ambassadors expand the reach of the LTSAE program and support their respective state/territory’s work toward improving early identification of developmental delays and disabilities, including autism.


Professionals with medical, child development, developmental disability, special education, and early intervention expertise are selected by the Centers for Disease Control to serve in this role.

Addressing Equity for Black Children & Youth with Special Health Care Needs

A medical home is an approach to providing comprehensive primary care that facilitates partnerships between patients, clinicians, medical staff, and families. It includes specialty care, educational services, family support, and more. 


The National Resource Center for Patient/Family-Centered Medical Home is offering a FREE online course about factors that impact equitable health care for Black children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN).


This 2-hour course covers the following topics:

  • Historical Trauma of Racism and Ableism in Pediatric Medicine
  • Increasing Equitable Care for Black CYSHCN Through Medical Home
  • Intentionally Engage Black Fathers in their Children’s Care
  • Systems of Care for Black CYSHCN


This course is available at no charge.

Learn How to Prevent and Address Discrimination

The New Jersey Division on Civil Rights (DCR) offers training aimed at preventing and addressing discrimination through its Education and Training Unit.


These interactive sessions educate participants about their rights and responsibilities under the: 

  • New Jersey Law Against Discrimination
  • New Jersey Family Leave Act, 
  • Fair Chance in Housing Act


They also raise awareness about current anti-bias issues, including two focused on Youth Bias Prevention.


All workshops are currently being offered via Zoom and are FREE to the public.
