A Letter From Our New Executive Director, Carolyn Hayer

Greetings,

Happy New Year to all!

I hope that 2023 brings health, happiness, and peace to you and your loved ones. 2022 was a banner year for SPAN as we celebrated 35 years of empowering families as advocates and partners in improving outcomes for infants, toddlers, children, youth and young adults and recognized Diana Autin for her fierce leadership guiding SPAN through enormous growth to the strong organization it is today. We are grateful for her continued dedication to serving families. Thank you to all who supported us either by attending our gala celebration on December 12, making a donation, placing an ad in our gala journal, or sharing information about SPAN. We are well positioned to embark on a new year with new beginnings.

This week marks the start of my tenure as the new executive director at SPAN. I am honored, excited, and grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing to work with SPAN’s dedicated staff to provide families with the information, assistance, and support they need to thrive. For most of us at SPAN, the work is personal – many have traveled the same path as the families we serve. We have navigated those waters and use our knowledge and experience to support others on their journey. This is my story too – I first came to SPAN over 20 years ago seeking help for my family, then served as a volunteer before joining the staff. I have served in many roles at SPAN - providing phone assistance to callers, presenting workshops, directing various projects, and supporting other family serving organizations, all of which have prepared me to take on this new role.

SPAN remains committed to helping children and families with the greatest need and to reaching our most underserved communities. We recognize that the best way to do that is by partnering with families and community leaders to share resources, build relationships, and to be inclusive of all people to build equitable, educated, engaged, and empowered communities. I eagerly anticipate all of the wonderful work we can achieve together.

I am excited about what comes next as SPAN continues to empower families and engage professionals and organizations by building capacity through knowledge sharing, leadership development, and public policy advocacy. I am committed to expanding our work and identifying new opportunities for collaboration, networking, and partnerships. I am invested in the success of all children and families and I know that SPAN’s knowledgeable staff, dedicated volunteers, and devoted Board of Directors join me in that goal.

I am grateful and excited for this new opportunity. I look forward to continuing SPAN’s efforts towards achieving our mission to empower and support families, and inform and involve professionals interested in the healthy development and education of children and youth, and to making a difference, one child and family at a time.
