How Families Can Approach 'The Great Unmasking'
Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health
The virus is still a concern, specifically, for children under 5 years old who are not eligible to be vaccinated and people for whom the vaccine is not as protective due to underlying medical conditions.
A framework to guide families in making decisions about participating in activities includes protecting: yourself, your family, and your community.
Protecting Yourself: Full vaccination, including booster(s), provides the most protection for those 5 years and older who do not have issues with their immune system.
Protecting Your Family: If you have kids under 5 or an immunocompromised person in your household, there are other considerations. Guidance varies depending upon community transmission rates. If transmission rates are low, families can prioritize the most important activities, like school. If rates are higher, it makes sense to wear masks at school or at small indoor gatherings, arrange outdoor playdates and avoid large indoor gatherings.
Protecting Your Community: For those who have been exposed to COVID-19 and are not up-to-date on vaccinations, quarantining and isolation are needed to keep others safe.
