FAMILY BUSINESSES STILL MAKING HISTORY IN CHEMUNG COUNTY
The sense of belonging and responsibility that characterizes a family-owned business can often extend to all employees and result in less turnover and higher rates of job satisfaction.

Chemung County has a strong foundation of families who have been in business for decades, and they are adept at managing a workforce that is more diverse than ever. They recognize the different needs of the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z groups. They provide opportunities to give back to the community, recognition, flexible schedules and even retirement planning. Most of all, they provide work environments where employees feel valued and respected.

"At Southerntier Custom Fabricators, we always say that we are a family-run business that employs families" says President Ian Morrell. "We've been in business since 1982 and often have multiple generations working for us." The Hilliard Corporation was founded in Elmira in 1905, and other family run establishments include Swift Glass, Linn S. Chapel Co., Edger Enterprises, Welliver, Air Flo Manufacturing, Seneca Beverage, and more.

STEG's Senior Economic Development Manager Jill Koski says that supporting these area companies in securing the next generation of workers is critical. "We will continue to tell the story of these great companies and forge partnerships that will help connect them with workers. Their leadership and commitment to Chemung County is crucial to our economic future."
