The Town continues to advance Vision Zero initiatives, with approximately 96 roadway safety projects completed thus far in 2026 and another 114 currently under construction or planned for completion this year. Notable projects now in progress include:
Dynamic No‑Turn‑on‑Red signage, which illuminates during the pedestrian phase, has been installed at the Trout Brook Drive southbound approach to Park Road. Installation for all four approaches at Trout Brook Drive and Farmington Avenue is in progress.
Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB), or crosswalk warning lights, are in progress at Asylum Avenue at Auburn Road, Farmington Avenue at Walbridge Road, Fern Street at Montclair Drive, Hilldale Road at Peyote Road, Mountain Road at Buena Vista Road, and Prospect Avenue at Merrill Street.
Curb extensions on Quaker Lane South at Woodmere Road/St. Charles Street and at White Avenue/Seymour Avenue are being installed ahead of fall resurfacing. These replace quick‑build extensions installed in 2025. The Woodmere Road/St. Charles Street crosswalk will also receive a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB). A RRFB at White Avenue/Seymour Avenue is already installed.
Raised crosswalks will soon be installed at Fern Street at Montclair Drive and at Steele Road at Birch Road.
A raised intersection will soon be installed at North Quaker Lane at Middlebrook Road.
A speed hump is planned for Tunxis Road near Cornell Road.
Neighborhood 25 MPH speed limits have been implemented on 13 streets in the Charter Oak School neighborhood, with state approvals underway to sign 25 MPH speed limits at an additional 12 streets in the Smith School neighborhood.
