As part of our Centennial celebration, we would like to share a piece of the sanctuary with you each day in April. We hope you will enjoy learning more about each feature, and find joy and peace by viewing the photographs.
Today: The Christus Garden
The Christus Statue
This immense bronze statue of Jesus carrying the cross was cast in Gesslingen, Wurttemburg, Germany, in 1931 by Professor Pruszinski.
Its presence reflects the burden Christ carried in the central act of our salvation.
In his present position, Jesus has his head uplifted and is pointing to the lofty Statue of Mary, high atop the cliff.
Early Years
With its dedication in 1931, the Christus statue was one of the first installations at The Grotto.
Below:The statue is seen next to a small chapel, which was the first chapel at the Sanctuary. That chapel, which is no longer there, was replaced years later by the Chapel of Mary.
The Christus Garden
The Christus Garden is located on The Grotto's lower level, near the plaza. There are several benches for you to sit and reflect, pray or simply rest.
The lower level is free to all throughout the year.
Storm Damage to the Garden
Several tall evergreens fell on and around the Christus Garden in the January storm. Fortunately, the statue was unharmed. However, there was some damage to some rhododendrons in the garden, but they were saved and with time should return to their former beauty.

Tomorrow: Dambana
Father, the beauty of your creative power has burst forth in the colors and smells of Spring, bringing joy to all.
May we expand this beauty in the way we lovingly care for each other.
Amen.
