High School Students Teach Sixth Graders About Mental Health

undefined

Dobbs Ferry High School students Yael Klein and Sara Faisal spoke with sixth grade students in Rebecca Wing’s class about a critical health topic, mental health. The sixth graders looked up to the upper classmen, who explained the basics of the topic and discussed their experiences with mental health.

“Yael and I have had our own experiences with mental health,” said Faisal “The JCK actually came to our school for assemblies where we talked about mental health and issues that we might be facing. It’s ok to talk about them. It made me feel like I wasn’t alone, their assemblies really resonated with us.”

Hearing about the struggles of mental health from someone of their own generation served to ground the lesson in reality for the students. They asked many questions and shared their own experiences and strategies in a collaborative effort to support one another.

“Our goal is to bring the mental health conversation to kids like you guys,” said Yael.

With the prevalence of mental illness among young people across the world, it is more important than ever for students to learn about mental health, to have these conversations, and to support one another.

Middle School Students Practice Lab Skills

Sixth grade science students practiced foundational science skills during the Rainbow Volume Lab. Using lab equipment, including graduated cylinders, test tubes and lab safety goggles, students were able to precisely measure and equalize volumes of colored liquid.

Students took the lab assignment seriously, maintaining safety with personal protective equipment and by keeping their work areas clean. These future scientists will use these skills to stay safe while learning throughout the rest of their educational journey.
