Celebrating the Arts in Dobbs Ferry

With our fridges full of leftovers and decorations patiently waiting to be packed away, the 2024-2025 holiday season has come to an end. The cheer goes on, however, in the following recordings of our High School, Middle School, and Fifth Grade Winter Concerts.

Enjoy our student musicians’ renditions of Down to the River to Pray through Salmo 150 and many more, performed by every musical group from the boys' high school acapella group, Acafellas, through all of our band and orchestra groups. The High School, Middle School, and Fifth Grade Winter Concerts were recorded and will be available at the links to our websites below.

Music education is going strong in Dobbs Ferry Schools, as evidenced by an overflowing cast of high school performers that couldn’t even fit on the stage in some cases. Thank you to the Dobbs Ferry community for showing up to support our students at each of our shows, including what may have been the largest ever turnout at our middle school concert.

Our student musicians worked hard to prepare for these shows from September right up until their performances in December. Now, they’re already hard at work preparing for their Spring performances. Don't forget to save the date for the Fourth Grade Winter Concert on January 22nd.

Staff Spotlight: Olivia Kavanaugh

Olivia Kavanaugh came to Dobbs Ferry this past September with five years of experience in art instruction in schools and a lifetime of passion for exploring and teaching art. She has quickly found herself at home at Springhurst Elementary School.

“I’ve been teaching art in some capacity for 11 years and my favorite part of it has always been seeing students have that ‘aha moment.’” Kavanaugh said. “One of my students was new to the district and to art. He told me he didn’t know how to draw a heart, so I sat down with him and helped him figure it out. Once he did it by himself, his face absolutely lit up, and he kept calling me over, saying ‘Look! I made another one!’”

Kavanaugh teaches every grade level at Springhurst and almost every student in the school works with her, exploring art at several classes every month. Her curriculum combines creativity and strong art traditions through projects like the 3d paper lanterns project, inspired by the works of Rob Dunlavey, and the miniature pumpkin room sculptures, inspired by the works of Yayoi Kusama.

Her students have readily embraced Kavanaugh and her lessons, taking on each new project and remaining engaged throughout. Even the two-week-long winter break wasn’t enough to throw off students’ focus, who got right back to work on their projects as soon as they were back in the classroom.

Kavanaugh has easily found a place among the rest of the incredible faculty members at Springhurst Elementary School and has already made an impression on her students. We’re all excited to see what she has planned!

Upcoming Musicals at Dobbs Ferry Schools

After the incredible turnout for our winter concerts. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the district later this school year for both Springhurst Elementary's performance of Seussical Jr. and Dobbs Ferry High School’s performance of Alice by Heart. Our cast and crew are already memorizing scripts, building sets, and practicing choreography facilitated by the staff members who make each year’s productions possible.

Check out Springhurst Elementary School’s production of Seussical Jr. on March 14th and 15th.

Check out Dobbs Ferry High School’s production of Alice by Heart on April 4th and 5th.

Gingerbread House Competition

The annual DFHS Gingerbread House Competition wrapped up before the break and there were some incredible builds on display this year. Thanks to high school art teacher and Dobbs Ferry alum Serena Bushi for keeping this tradition alive and congratulations to all of our builders for creating some of the most impressive gingerbread creations that Dobbs Ferry has ever seen!
