Rivertown Legends Hockey Team

Wins Thirteen Straight Games

After celebrating their 100th win recently and last night's game, the Rivertown Legends combined hockey team comprising students from Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Ossining, Sleepy Hollow, Ardsley, Leffell School, and Croton Harmon is up 13 wins this season with an undefeated record.

The five Dobbs Ferry student-athletes on the teamCody Schiff, Patch Gorham, Ryan Brennan, Killian O’Connor, and Max Montgomeryhave been consistent contributors to their team on and off the ice. The team has seen a lot of success this season as a result of everyone’s efforts.

“We started off on the right foot playing with confidence and pace,” said Coach Kevin Hagen. “Relentless on the forecheck and creating turnovers has been a positive for us. Skilled plays and puck possession is what drives our success along with solid goaltending. We make it hard for other teams to defend. We move the puck and play a fast transition game.”

Staff Train to

Secure Our Schools

No priority is higher in the minds of Dobbs Ferry school staff and faculty than that of the safety of our students. Before all of the academic, athletic, arts, and co-curricular offerings provided by our district, it is our solemn and foremost responsibility to maintain a safe and secure environment for our students to learn and grow in every school day.

In pursuit of that responsibility, over 20 school administrators attended a threat assessment training session with Brian Shanahan last week. Through team building and training based on real-world events, they honed the skills that will help to keep our schools safe.

The Eagle Eye enewsletter needs YOUR help! We try our best to highlight all of the incredible achievements of our students and to keep the community informed about the goings on at Dobbs Ferry Schools.

Dobbs Ferry Student-Athlete Scores

1000 Points in Varsity Basketball

There are few players like Anthony Ficarrotta. With 1,165 points on the Dobbs Ferry High School Varsity Boys Basketball team and 35.3 points per game, Ficarrotta leads all of Section I in scoring. If all of that wasn’t impressive enough, Ficarrotta is only in his junior season. One might expect Dobbs Ferry’s premier boys varsity basketball player to have a healthy ego, but conversations with his coach, Scott Patrillo, paint a picture of a hard-working and team-oriented student-athlete with a deep love for basketball.

“Some people will see that Anthony averages 35 points a game and think that that means he must be a selfish player. He isn’t. He’s efficient,” said Coach Patrillo. “He averages 10 rebounds a game, does whatever is best to win the game, and he always elevates his teammates. Anthony is a great leader both on and off the court.”

When practice starts at 8 a.m., Ficarrotta can be found in the gym by 7 a.m. and, reportedly, he’s known for asking his coaches to open the gym 15 minutes earlier. Ficarrotta's love for the game and his team was reciprocated recently when they celebrated his 1,000th point. They gave him balloons and a custom basketball signed by his teammates.

Congratulations to Ficarrotta on this inspiring milestone, which was only possible thanks to years of dedication and hard work.

Therapy Dogs Support Students During Midterms

Testing is stressful. That's why our students at Dobbs Ferry High School had the chance to hang out with some furry friends this midterm week.

The activities branch of the student government sponsored the visit by BluePath service dogs to give students a well-deserved break from testing.

Staff Spotlight: Ellen Elsen

Many of our staff members balance several sets of responsibilities throughout each school day. One such staff member is Ellen Elsen, Dobbs Ferry High School and Middle School’s librarian. With two schools of students to support, Ellen balances the needs of each individual student, whether they just need a quiet place to study or help learning how to research sources for a project.

“I try to make sure that the library is a warm and welcoming place for all of our students,” Elsen said. “It’s important to make sure that students have a place where they can feel comfortable but also can focus and get their work done.”

Elsen’s role isn’t limited to managing the physical and digital collection used by the middle and high school. She hosts events like “book tastings” in which students read snippets from a wide selection of books to inspire curiosity and interest in reading. Elsen is also an invaluable resource for students learning how to research and cite topics for papers and projects, a skill which will only grow in importance as students advance in their education.

"In the past, libraries were the primary means to access information. In the internet age, access to information is not the issue–we have 24/7 access to much more than we could ever read–but developing the skills to efficiently locate the most relevant, reliable, and authoritative information is paramount," Elsen said.

Students and staff use the library as a literary, curricular, co-curricular, and collaborative space where a student can find a quiet place to read, or one in which they can work on a group project with their peers. In many ways, the library is the heart of our schools, where students in need of space, support, or just a break can come and find exactly what they need to learn and grow.
