Many of our staff members balance several sets of responsibilities throughout each school day. One such staff member is Ellen Elsen, Dobbs Ferry High School and Middle School’s librarian. With two schools of students to support, Ellen balances the needs of each individual student, whether they just need a quiet place to study or help learning how to research sources for a project.
“I try to make sure that the library is a warm and welcoming place for all of our students,” Elsen said. “It’s important to make sure that students have a place where they can feel comfortable but also can focus and get their work done.”
Elsen’s role isn’t limited to managing the physical and digital collection used by the middle and high school. She hosts events like “book tastings” in which students read snippets from a wide selection of books to inspire curiosity and interest in reading. Elsen is also an invaluable resource for students learning how to research and cite topics for papers and projects, a skill which will only grow in importance as students advance in their education.
"In the past, libraries were the primary means to access information. In the internet age, access to information is not the issue–we have 24/7 access to much more than we could ever read–but developing the skills to efficiently locate the most relevant, reliable, and authoritative information is paramount," Elsen said.
Students and staff use the library as a literary, curricular, co-curricular, and collaborative space where a student can find a quiet place to read, or one in which they can work on a group project with their peers. In many ways, the library is the heart of our schools, where students in need of space, support, or just a break can come and find exactly what they need to learn and grow.
