Meet the Dobbs Ferry High School

Fencing Team

New this year is the Dobbs Ferry High School Fencing Team! This new co-ed athletic offering is available to DFHS students thanks to the passion of its four current members and the support of school officials.

“I’ve been fencing for a couple of years and we noticed that a lot of other schools had teams,” said sophomore Myles Diruggiero. “So we thought that we should have a team too. I got enough people to join to start a team, but we’re hoping to have even more people join the team next year so we can compete in more events.”

Diruggiero and his teammates’ passion for the sport is apparent in their dedication to practice and improvement. While fencing might not be everyone’s first thought when it comes to sports, it is very much a competitive, physical and mental contest.

“It’s a lot of fun and it’s unique,” Diruggiero said. “It’s both easy to learn and technical. There’s a feeling of getting a touch and winning a belt that’s so satisfying. ”

While Diruggiero has a long history with fencing, most of his teammates had very little fencing experience before this season.

“I started fencing a couple of months ago, at the start of this season,” said teammate Ender Barker. “I had seen fencing at the Olympics, but I had never tried it. It’s very different from other sports I’ve played. It’s not a ball sport; it’s sort of like wrestling in that there are techniques that use your whole body, and you have to have this body awareness to avoid getting hit. There’s a rhythm to it. It’s more of a dance with your opponent than other sports. Despite that, it was very easy to pick up and start.”

Fencing is uniquely defined by dualities. There is a physical, reflexive, and technique component to the sport, as well as a mental game between opponents of feints and prediction. Students enjoy the camaraderie and support of a team as well as the personal satisfaction of individual performance on the strip.

Students interested in the DFHS Fencing Team should contact the athletic department for more information.

Anthony Ficarrotta Breaks Section 1

Scoring Record

After over 40 years, what once seemed like an impossible record has been broken. On Friday, February 6, 2026, Dobbs Ferry High School senior Anthony Ficarrotta made history when he broke the Section 1 scoring record, which stood for 43 years. Even with this incredible achievement under his belt, Ficarrotta emphasized the importance of teamwork and every other aspect of the game in addition to scoring.

“I value team play, defense and rebounding,” Ficarrotta told NCSA College Recruiting. “I feel that making other players around you better is a vital part of being a good player.”
