A Life-Changing Weekend for Those in Grades 10-12
Registration Closes Friday for Happening 101

After the closing Eucharist for Happening 100, from left, Annabel West, Katie Grant (Rector of Happening 101) and Jo Simmons gather outside the Chapel.

The deadline to register for the next Happening is Friday, September 7. This Happening will be #101 at Honey Creek September 14-16, 2018, and is open to those in grades 10 - 12. Katie Grant from Good Shepherd, Augusta, is the Rector for the upcoming weekend.

Led by teens for teens, during a Happening weekend, participants worship, play, sing, and talk about God's place in their lives. They make new friends who share similar concerns and questions - a reassuring discovery. A teenager who acts as "rector" leads the weekend with the help of a staff consisting mostly of young people. Some staff members give challenging talks, after which there's time for discussion and activity. Together, the staff and participants share in an exploration of the impact of Christian faith in their daily lives. Happeners who attend a weekend for their first time are called "Candidates." To be a Candidate, one must:
1. Have completed the 9th grade and have not begun college.
2. Fill out the application.
Happening costs $101 to attend, and financial assistance is available. For more information, please visit the Georgia Happening website.

Diocesan 2019 Budget
Diocesan Council will be reviewing the Draft 2019 Diocesan budget at its upcoming meeting on September 14th. After review, the recommended budget will be presented at the Diocesan Convention in November for formal vote and approval.

Many of our congregations are currently developing budgets for 2019. This is a wonderful, and sometimes stressful, time to look at the mission story of a congregation. Some best practices to consider include:

* How does your budget tell your congregation's mission story?
Do you construct a narrative budget? Does your budget help demonstrate to the congregation the impact your congregation has on ministry? Establish a narrative during budget development to tell your budget story. It is not what it costs to keep the lights on, but what occurs because the lights are on.

* Do you have strong financial records?
Data and past year trends can help inform estimates for budget items. Do you have strong financial records to draw those trends? Review your current financial records to determine how they can help inform developing a budget.

* Are you thinking outside your comfort zone?
Oftentimes we hear about the challenges of balancing the budget. There are many real budget challenges facing our congregations today. However, how does the life, mission, and work of the church play into your budget planning? It's important to set "stretch" goals: to challenge your congregations to set targets and goals for itself and work together as a parish to reach those goals.

Additional tips and tricks are taught during Project Resource. Looking for more information on that training? Please visit the calendar for upcoming training events.

Health Insurance Annual Enrollment
Annual enrollment for Diocesan health insurance begins October 15th and runs through November 2nd. You will begin to receive mail communication from CPG on September 26th. The Diocese is currently in the process of plan selections and a detailed article/communication will be delivered next week about changes to the 2019 plan prices and selections. This is a very critical announcement for clergy, administrators, and plan participants to review to understand the process and potential changes to your plan in 2019. Please read next week's From the Field for more information.
