Cebu Seed Sanctuary Update

After Recent 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake

We are grateful to share that all of our Cebu based team and partner farmers across Cebu are safe from the recent 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the island on September 30th. The epicenter was in Northern Cebu, in Bogo City, which is very close to our Cebu Seed Sanctuary.

Thanks to quick assessments from Harry, our Seed Production Coordinator and Kuya Ronald, our Seed Production Assistant, we are relieved to report that while there are minor damages such as cracks in the drying and processing areas, fallen supplies, and losses in our herbarium (seed display collections), major structures like the Seed Library Hut and Seed Production Areas remain intact.

The greatest immediate challenges are the lack of electricity and water across much of the island, making recovery and daily operations difficult. There are many initiatives responding to these immediate needs and we are pointing our team and partners to these direct relief services as needed.

Most importantly, our team and partner families are safe. They are prioritizing immediate needs, tending to their homes, and ensuring the sanctuary remains secure as aftershocks continue. Read more here about the over 3,000 plus aftershocks, including a 5.0 magnitude one, just yesterday in Bogo City.

We are deeply grateful for their resilience and for your support that makes this work possible. As the community begins to recover, we anticipate increased costs for water, repairs, and replacing damaged supplies.

If you would like to help ensure the Cebu Seed Sanctuary continues to thrive, please consider making a donation today.Your gift will directly support recovery needs, from securing equipment to ensuring longer term safe storage of seeds.
