Dear Friends,

Here we go!

Summer was such a fun and vibrant season at the Funhouse, and now, with the change of seasons and a new school year ahead, we’re excited to launch a whole new round of enriching afterschool programs. From music, art, science, and technology, our classes will offer a wide range of activities for kids of all ages—from birth through 18.

Our teen mentoring programs are also underway, with some incredible matches being made. We’re planning more fun events too—opportunities for kids to connect, socialize, and build healthy, positive norms both at school and in the community. As the saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” We know that by providing a safe space for kids to belong and discover, we’re creating protective factors that support their health and well-being, while also building resilience and confidence to face life’s challenges.

Now in my second year of leading the team at the Funhouse Commons, I am more convinced than ever of the vital role we play in our community. And as we continue the work that began 25 years ago, we’re thrilled to invite you to help us celebrate this milestone.

We’ll be hosting a 25th Anniversary Thank You Party to honor our original founders, board members, directors, staff, volunteers, and donors—those whose heart, soul, time, and generosity have made the Funhouse a beacon of light in San Juan County. This will be a casual celebration where you can meet our staff, see what’s happening inside the Funhouse, enjoy a slideshow, hear words of gratitude, and of course, share some delicious wood-fired pizza, hot apple cider, and homemade desserts.

It takes a Village, and the Funhouse!

PEACH PIT UPDATE

"By Youth, For Youth" isn’t just our motto — it’s the driving force behind everything we do at the Peach Pit. Each school year, we bring on a new team of Youth Staff to take the lead, supported by a team of dedicated adults. This year's crew just wrapped up an intensive week of training that covered everything from event planning and youth development to team building, space upkeep — and yes, mastering the art of the perfect Italian soda.

But that’s just the beginning. Throughout the year, these young leaders will continue to develop their skills through hands-on experience and ongoing training. They’re not only helping shape the Peach Pit — they’re building the foundation to become confident, capable leaders in their schools, neighborhoods, and beyond.

COALITION FOR ORCAS YOUTH

Join us for the October 14th COY meeting @ 5:30pm at the Funhouse. Page from the Commons Goodness Project will be presenting on the topic of LGBTQIA2S+ youth.

All are welcome!

WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO.....

Last Saturday, a lucky group of Funhouse kids spent the day with Emerald Island Charters on the water!

The group was led by Nessa, our Outdoor Discovery Squad environmental educator, Captain Greg and two local naturalists. They sailed to Jones Island, took a hike and learned all about our local ecology.

The Funhouse hosted our second annual

Microcinema Teen Film Fest and Film Workshop!

Hana Peoples, of Orcas Microcinema, selected two internationally-acclaimed films about youth that we watched. We also worked with Paul Stiple of the Northwest Film Forum, and hosted a direct animation workshop for teens. They spent the day etching and drawing on to 16mm film strips to create their own stop motion reels.
