Remembering Carvell Richard

One of our Marine family members, Carvell Richard, passed away unexpectedly Monday August 24, 2026.

Carvell worked for the company for nearly 31 years, opening the yard each morning, help unload lumber trucks during the early hours, and staff the lumber yard gate.

Many throughout our company knew and loved Carvell as both a valued coworker and a friend. Customers knew him by name, and Carvell knew every one of them. He was welcoming and friendly to all (except those he caught stealing). Carvell corrected checkout errors professionally without making customers feel they had done something wrong.

Carvell was dedicated, dependable, and an ever-present ambassador for the company. Outside of work, Carvell knew a great deal about deer and was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. Carvell, rest in peace. You will be greatly missed.

IS IT STILL A SECRET?

On Nantucket we always used to say, “September is the best kept secret.” But with social media there are no secrets anymore. However, the island gets a little less crowded, a lot less noisy, and the beaches are waiting for us to ease into the fall season.  As we collectively exhale, we notice the things we didn’t want to deal with in the summer. Your house might not be too worse for wear from sandy feet, wet bathing suits and the washing machine on overdrive, but it’s time to pay attention to some of the most satisfying projects that make a house feel fresh, cared for and ready for another season. During the summer, a Nantucket house belongs to everyone. In September, it becomes yours again.

FALL IS THE BEST TIME TO SEED AND FEED

The autumn season comes with a mix of warm soil and cool air, perfect for planting grass seed and allowing time for new grass roots to develop before winter sets in. It is also a good time to fertilize to build stronger, deeper roots for winter, resulting in a thicker, greener lawn next spring.
