Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15-October 15
Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States, honors the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.
The month-long celebration highlights the histories, traditions, and achievements of people with roots in Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The start date, September 15, coincides with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
The United States Census Bureau estimates the Hispanic population in the United States to be over 60 million people, making Hispanic Americans 19 percent of the population and the largest racial or ethnic minority group in the United States. There are more than 4.7 million Hispanic-owned firms in the United States, providing over three million jobs and contributing more than $500 billion to the United States economy; and the Hispanic community is active in all units of local, state, and federal government, from volunteer boards and commissions to civilian employment to elected offices, and among the more than one million Hispanics who have served or are currently serving in the US Armed Forces.
Hispanic Heritage Month not only recognizes the past but also emphasizes the continued impact of Hispanic Americans on the nation's culture, economy, and society today. The celebration fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures that enrich the United States.

Hunger Action Month
Hunger Action Month, observed every September, is a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness and inspiring action to combat food insecurity in the United States.
Organized by Feeding America, the month serves as a call to individuals, businesses, and organizations to work together to alleviate hunger in their communities. Activities during the month include food drives, fundraising efforts, volunteer opportunities, and advocacy for policy changes that address hunger. With millions of Americans facing food insecurity, Hunger Action Month highlights the urgent need to support food banks, reduce food waste, and improve access to nutritious meals.
The City of Twentynine Palms is committed to working with FIND Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America® nationwide network of food banks, in educating people about the role and importance of food banks in addressing hunger and raising awareness of the need to devote more resources and attention to hunger issues; and more than 150,000 people on average in the desert region rely on food provided by the members of the FIND Food Bank each month; and the members of FIND Food Bank distributed more than 22 million meals in through its network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community organizations.
The campaign encourages everyone to take small, meaningful steps, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the message about the issue of hunger. It serves as a reminder that hunger is a solvable problem when communities come together to take action.

Youth Council
Teen Technology Training Day
Three Youth Council members volunteered at the Senior Center for a Teen Technology Training Day, helping seniors with their iPads, laptops, and cell phones. They assisted with tasks such as setting up passwords, transferring files, and creating new accounts.
As the teens worked side by side with the seniors, they engaged in warm conversations, sharing stories about their lives and experiences. The seniors were grateful for the help, while the teens enjoyed the opportunity to connect. The event fostered a sense of community, bridging the gap between generations through technology and shared moments. It was a rewarding experience for both the Youth Council members and the seniors.

Carnival Cancellation Notice
It is with regret that we announce the cancellation of the carnival for this year’s Pioneer Days celebration. Paul Maurer Shows, the company contracted to provide the carnival, has experienced a significant loss of commercial drivers and laborers who were working in the United States under H-2B visas. This unfortunate situation has critically impacted their ability to operate.
Despite our efforts to secure a partnership with another carnival company, we have found that many are either already booked for fall 2024 events or facing similar challenges. The U.S. State Department oversees the issuance and management of work visas, and the current labor shortages have affected many businesses across the country.
We understand that the carnival is a beloved part of Pioneer Days, bringing joy and excitement to our community. While this news is disappointing for everyone who eagerly anticipates this annual tradition, we are committed to preserving the spirit of Pioneer Days. The Parks & Recreation Department is actively working to provide alternative activities that will engage the community, such as the before-mentioned activities, and ensure that the celebration remains a vibrant and meaningful event.
This year, we see the absence of the carnival as an opportunity to reconnect with the “grassroots” origins of Pioneer Days, focusing on the traditions that predate the inclusion of a carnival. Change is never easy, but it can open doors to new experiences that honor the true essence of our community.
We invite everyone to join us for this special celebration as we come together to honor our past, celebrate our present, and forge a bright future for Twentynine Palms.

BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD FOR LUCKIE PARK
The City of Twentynine Palms is excited to announce the commencement of the Ballfield Light Project at Luckie Park, scheduled to begin within the next week. This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to enhance community facilities and ensure the safety and quality of life for all residents and visitors.

Residents and visitors to Luckie Park are advised to use the detour routes that will be provided. The Public Works Department will set up a temporary fencing laydown yard at the north end of Luckie Avenue to facilitate this work.
Qualite, a leading provider of lighting solutions contracted by the City, will be on-site starting August 7 to begin the demolition process. The new, advanced LED lighting poles are scheduled to arrive by August 26, with installation to follow immediately.
The project is anticipated to reach completion by October 1, 2024. During this period, sections of the sidewalk may be temporarily closed to ensure public safety.
