It's our favorite time of year here at Cape Hatteras National Seashore: baby sea turtle time!
Over the past few weeks many of this year's 224 sea turtle nests have been hatching. After a nest hatches, your park staff dig up the nest to learn more about these important island visitors - they count how many eggs hatched and didn't hatch, and sometimes they even find baby turtles who need a little help making it to the ocean.
Since we weren't able to invite the public to these nest excavations this year, we worked with your parks staff to bring them to you virtually!
Click here and here to watch the videos - baby hatchlings included! - and learn more about how your park's biologists are using science to help our sea turtles. There is also still time to adopt your very own sea turtle nest!
I hope you have been able to make the most of this unique summer, and that these monthly newsletters have helped you feel connected to your OBX community even if you haven't been able to visit us just yet. We look forward to continuing to be your partner in supporting these amazing places!
See you in your parks,
