SASSY Sister!

Welcome to the September 2025 issue of SASSY Times! This month, you will find a powerful article written by my bestie, and SSL Co-Founder and VP, Yvonne Haase, LMHC, titled "Beyond the Breaking Point: Why Women Suffer in Silence," in honor of Suicide Prevention Month. Her wisdom as a psychotherapist offers comfort, awareness, and hope, while reminding us of the importance of connection, empathy, and ensuring that no woman feels alone.

I am also excited to announce that we have officially launched our 24th Annual John & Elizabeth’s Toy Drive & Fundraiser. Thanks to supporters like you, more than 85,000 children in our community have received toys over the years.  Last year, in partnership with our charity partner, the Fort Lauderdale Black Police Officers Association (FLBPOA), we brought hope and joy to 5,000 low-income children in Broward County.

This year, the need is greater than ever. Many families are struggling, and too many parents face the heartbreaking reality of not knowing how to make the holidays special for their children. But together, we can change that story.

Here is how you can help:

  • Donate directly and let our volunteers shop for you. Every $25 provides a toy for a child in need (our preference so that we can buy in bulk).
  • Shop from our Amazon Wishlist

As a psychotherapist and educator, I know toys are more than simple gifts. They help children build resilience, spark imagination, and feel a sense of joy and belonging. Your generosity makes that possible.

Can I count on your generosity to make this year’s Toy Drive the most successful yet?

Additionally, Tuesday, September 21st is World Gratitude Day—a special day to express thanks, celebrate kindness, and value the community we share.

I am deeply grateful to this community for supporting my life’s work of empowering women and children to thrive. Let’s use this day to uplift and appreciate one another as we continue this important work.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Beyond the Breaking Point: Why Women Suffer in Silence

By: Yvonne Haase, LMHC

As a mental health professional, I see this every day! Women around the world wake up and push forward, juggling the roles of mother, partner, caregiver, employee, and friend. On the outside, they appear strong, composed, and independent. But on the inside, many are silently battling emotional exhaustion, chronic stress, trauma, anxiety, or depression. Can you relate to this feeling? If so, it’s time to break the silence and take a stand for women.

Why are we silent?

The reasons are deep and real:

  • It’s 2025, and the stigma around mental health is still very real.
  • Women fear judgment from family, friends, or workplaces.
  • How many times have we heard that women are expected to be the strong ones?
  • A belief that asking for help means you’re weak or failing as a woman.
  • Imposter Syndrome remains a factor for many women (I hope you read Dr. King’s article about this topic in last month’s SASSY Times. If not, please read it).

But let’s be clear:

Silence is not strength. Silence is isolation, and isolation leads to despair.

We’ve got this, ladies! This month, we break the Silence.

We’ve lost too many sisters, daughters, mothers, and friends to quiet suffering. This month, let’s bring awareness and commit to:

  • Start the conversation: A simple, “How are you really doing?” can open the door to healing.
  • Listen without judgment: Sometimes just being there is everything.
  • Know your resources: Be ready to guide someone to help.
  • Remind her that she’s not alone: The most powerful words may be, “I’m here with you.”
  • Together, we can challenge the expectation that women must be 'perfect' and embrace the full range of who they are without judgment.

If you are a woman who is suffering right now, this is for YOU:

If you feel like you’re drowning in it all, if you're thinking no one would understand, if you’ve ever felt like giving up…

You are not alone.

Many women have been exactly where you are, trapped, exhausted, scared, and feeling like there’s no way out.

But there is. There is hope. And there is help.

Here are three steps to take right now if you're feeling suicidal or overwhelmed:

1. Speak your truth. You don’t have to pretend.

You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to say something:

  • “I’m not okay, and I need someone to talk to.”

Reach out to someone safe—whether that’s a friend, family member, therapist, or support line. You deserve to be heard.

2. Connect with a crisis resource. You are never a burden

Help is available 24/7, and it’s never too late to reach out.

Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

You’ll be met with compassion, not judgment.

3. Keep yourself safe, you deserve to see tomorrow

If you feel unsafe:

  • Reach out, even if it's just a call or text.

Loving Reminders:

You are not the only one who has ever felt this way. You do not need to carry this pain alone. We are here for you.
