Horse and Rider Advocate Series: Be an Equine Welfare Advocate
Our equine athletes are the heart of our sport. Without them, none of what we do is possible. We strive to give them the very best so they can be their greatest in the show ring, at home on a hack, and as a loyal companion. Occasionally, we observe behavior contradicting the respect and care our horses deserve. This may stem from a lack of education or unsportsmanlike conduct; nevertheless, we must be advocates for the behalf of all horses.
The USHJA and the USEF take safety and horse welfare very seriously. The USHJA Horse and Rider Advocates Committee seeks to educate equestrians on how to serve as advocates for horses. Any action appearing unsafe, unsportsmanlike, is a possible violation of the rules or is generally unsettling can be reported to an official and immediate action can be taken to help educate the individual how to better handle the situation

Sport History Spotlight: Barbara Worth Oakford
As Equitation Finals season gets under way, we’re remembering Show Jumping Hall of Famer Barbara Worth Oakford. From 1959 to 1983, she championed the Barbara Worth Good Seat and Hands Medal competition in California, the first-ever jumper-type equitation class whose year-end winners included Show Jumping Hall of Famers Mary Mairs (Chapot), Susan Hutchison and Anne Kursinski.
Oakford was a lifelong horsewomen. In 1927, at age 14, she opened her own hunter-jumper training business and competed for the next 40 years, often winning four of five classes at any given show. Among the successful horses she developed were Snowbound, Bill Steinkraus’s partner in winning the 1968 Olympic individual Gold Medal, and Balbriggan, who won championships from coast to coast for 15 years. She was among the founders of the Pacific Coast Horse Shows Association in 1946 and a respected “R” judge. Oakford was named AHSA Horsewoman of the Year in 1962.
