You can shorten our next On-Air Pledge Drive!
|
|
Our Fall Pledge Drive is scheduled to begin Wednesday, October 16th and end Saturday, October 19th. We would much rather bring you the classical music you enjoy without interruptions. But 70% of our budget comes from you, our listeners, and the drives are a necessary way to raise the money we need to bring you the classical music you love.
Here's how you can help
.
For every $75,000 we raise by Monday October 14
th
, we will shorten the Drive by one day.
We are counting additional gifts, new and gift memberships in this attempt to lop off a day or two. This is your chance to get us to our regular 100% classical music schedule faster.
Since we began giving our listeners the opportunity to shorten the drives by buying back a day or two of regular programming, we have eliminated over 20% of our scheduled on-air fundraising days, while other Public Radio stations have added days to their pledging. This successful effort is something we can all be proud of.
Like you, we believe there is a place in radio for classical music and opera formats, undisturbed by commercial interruptions. So, while other radio stations throughout the country continue to abandon classical music, we’ve remained true to our mission since 1951.
Still, we can only stay on the air with the continued financial support of our listeners. The Fall On-Air Drive is scheduled for 4 days, but
with your help, we can shorten it to three or fewer days
.
So give an additional gift or gift membership today to shorten the Drive.
You can charge your pledge on our
secure website by clicking here
.
Or you can call our Membership Office at 410-580-5800 and we will be happy to take your pledge.
Thank you for your continuing belief in, and support of, WBJC. With your help, non-commercial classical music will be heard on WBJC for many years to come.
Sincerely yours,

It’s in your hands -

As the debate about immigrants continues in the headlines, and being an immigrant myself, I often find myself thinking about the ways that migrants have left their indelible marks on our country over the years and decades—Albert Einstein, Andrew Carnegie, and Joseph Pulitzer are just some who spring to mind. The number of immigrant musicians—ranging from Irving Berlin to Yo-Yo Ma—is countless, but I want to highlight here just seven naturalized American composers who had a significant impact on the music of this country...

I read a book recently that sums up quite a few of the problems that new music has connecting with wider audiences, specifically regarding diversity. NYU Director of Piano Studies Marilyn Nonken’s new book Identity and Diversity in New Music: The New Complexities can be found
here
and, after you’ve read up on what’s going on in the DMV this month, go ahead and read the book as well; it’s a very engaging and interesting (and quick) read despite its appearance as an academic text. Also, when I post it (soon), listen to the interview I had with her in her studio at NYU Steinhardt. Then go support new music! There’s plenty going on this month.
