Del Monte Foods, Inc. , has been named 2020 Research and Development (R&D) Team of the Year by Food Processing Magazine . Each year, Food Processing Magazine nominates food or beverage companies across three size categories for innovative product development. Readers voted for Del Monte's R&D team to win in the large company category.

Established in the 1880s, Del Monte is one of America’s original plant-based food companies. Referring to the company's award-winning creativity and agility in a rapidly changing market, Loren Druz, vice president of R&D and quality assurance, notes that Del Monte has launched 50-plus new products in two years.

Citing the R&D team's makeup and chemistry, Loren says, "It's a very entrepreneurial product development process. We think of ourselves as a 150-year-old startup.”

Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa has been providing community-based food programs and partner services that focus on basic needs for Contra Costa's hungry since 1983. In addition to maintaining a food pantry, Loaves and Fishes provides hot lunches in dining rooms in Pittsburg, Martinez, and Walnut Creek. As a result of the pandemic, the nonprofit has seen the number of meals increase by 60%.

Kaiperm Credit Union is a longtime corporate supporter of Loaves and Fishes and is now collecting non-perishable food items for the organization's food pantry.

Please visit the big food drive barrel in the lobby of Kaiperm Credit Union's Shadelands branch with donations for those most in need.

Loaves and Fishes is particularly interested in donations of bottled water, canned goods, and pasta and sauce packages.

Walnut Creek's Rebound Program was launched in mid-May to help businesses rebound and re-open during the pandemic by relaxing restrictions and providing expanded operating spaces, free and expedited permitting for temporary changes, and simplified processes.

The first phase was focused on businesses and industries in the downtown area, with the intent to cover city-wide over the next several weeks. And that includes Shadelands.

Collette Hanna is the City's economic development manager. "We're hosting meetings directly with Shadelands tenants and businesses and building out the program based on feedback," says Collette.

"We're looking to help our local businesses as they transition during the crisis, and for insight on what we can do through the temporary nature of the Rebound Program, as well as what we can do for them on a more permanent, ongoing basis."

Calicraft Brewing Co. has been participating in the City's Rebound Program and is now welcoming patrons to its newly designed outdoor beer garden. Read below.

Rebound and re-open strategies:
Calicraft Brewing Co. has been busy the last few months, adapting and innovating in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Taking advantage of Walnut Creek's Rebound Program , Calicraft has opened its newly designed outdoor beer garden with 14 tables, social distancing, and plenty of fresh air. Partnering with onsite food trucks, Calicraft offers outdoor dining and drinking, with all outdoor seating and table service only. And to-go beer.

Calicraft is also participating in the #blackisbeautiful beer movement, a national initiative created by a Texas brewer to raise awareness around racial equality and social justice.

Calicraft has been serving up its own version of a Black is Beautiful brew since June 18. Brewmaster Thomas Vo explains that Calicraft's is a black IPA brewed with Rooted coffee and chocolate bitters, rather than the traditional dark malt.

Calicraft was featured on a KTVU Channel 2 news report about the initiative, which aired on June 30.

Watch the full KTVU video here , then stop by Calicraft's new beer garden and enjoy a cold one (or two) with family and friends.

Since 1982, the Walnut Creek Historical Society's annual Holiday Tea has been one of the nonprofit’s most important fundraisers, raising essential funding to keep the historic Shadelands Ranch Museum open and support its Third Grade Living History Program and Guided Downtown Walking Tours. This year, due to the health crisis, rather than holding the popular Victorian Tea Luncheon in the beautifully decorated 1903 era farmhouse, the Historical Society is bringing the luncheon to you!

• Pre-measured Shadelands Scone Dry Mix
• Homemade lemon curd
• Delicious shortbread cookies
• Special Blend Holiday Tea
• Two tea infusers
• Two WCHS commemorative cookbooks
