November 2018
Message From Our Co-Presidents
Dear Friends,

The month of November uniquely hosts the American holiday of Thanksgiving, a day to enjoy a festive meal with family and friends, and, most importantly, to give thanks for the blessings in our lives. Many Jewish holidays are, in fact, holidays of gratitude, making Thanksgiving a natural addition to the Jewish year.

Sisterhood would not be what it is today without our dedicated Members, and for that, we are so very thankful. We take joy in celebrating our Membership as we did at last month’s evening of Jewish Women’s Theater and are grateful for each and every person who joins Sisterhood, whether you are involved with our daily machinations, attend an occasional program or just want to help sustain our ongoing efforts to support our synagogue. We are thankful to you all.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Warmly,
Lisa Pompan & Leslie Wachtel

Shabbat Morning Children's Books
Sisterhood has provided books for children to borrow and enjoy on Shabbat mornings. The bookshelf is placed outside of Zeigler Sanctuary each week. In addition to Sisterhood-funded new books, we encourage everyone to donate gently used books. Jewish titles and themes are encouraged and donations may be brought to Ellen Pierson in the Temple office.
Prayers for Pittsburgh
As members of Women’s Leauge, many of us are wondering what we can do to help in the midst of such a tragedy. The Central Great Lakes region Sisterhood President has been in touch with Tree of Life congregation and with the Sisterhood Presidents at the two sisterhoods in Pittsburgh.  Here are some ideas of how to help:

-Your notes and messages sent to the congregation are always welcome. Their address is 5898 Wilkins Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15217.
-You can donate directly to Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh through its website, using  a credit card or debit card , or to a number of crowdfunding projects that have been launched, including  this verified GoFundMe effort

-Two Muslim-American education and activist groups have also organized  a fund for the Tree of Life community , to “send a powerful message of compassion through action,” as the groups state on the fund’s website, which also cites a teaching of the Quran: “Repel evil by that which is better”(41:34).”

-Finally, you might consider donating to  a group like HIAS , which the shooter had specifically named in  social-media posts . HIAS was created more than 100 years ago as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, an organization that brought Jewish refugees to the US.  For the past decade,  it has been assisting refugees of all faiths around the world.
Torah Fund
"Without Torah fund, we would have fewer scholarships, facilities, Rabbis and teachers. It has been, for all of us, indispensable." - Rabbi David Wolpe

Our annual Torah Fund campaign is underway. Please help Sisterhood support the education of our rabbis and cantors. Donate at the Benefactor level or above and receive the beautiful new “ATID” pin (pictured above). Click HERE to donate and explore the flyer below to learn more about the campaign.
