From the Pastor

It's been an exciting two weeks in our church as we have received eight new members, seven by transfer of membership and one by baptism. These new members made the decision to unite with our church family after participating in our Next Step class under the leadership of The Rev. Dr. Jim Clardy.

There may be others of you who are interested in church membership; it's important to note that participating in our Next Step class, while encouraged, is not a prerequisite for church membership. So if anyone reading this would like to have conversation with a clergy person about being baptized and/or becoming a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, please contact the church office.

This coming Sunday, we'll begin a new sermon series based on the membership vows that people take in our denomination. Specifically, members commit themselves to faithfully participate in the Church's ministries by their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Over the next five weeks, we'll highlight each of these dimensions of faithfulness and consider why each is important.

It is a privilege to serve God as one of your clergy.

The Alzheimer’s/Dementia Support Group will meet at 1:30 P.M. on Thursday, October 25 in Room 1203. The group meets again on November 15.

All SAGES are reminded that the Mustang Mash Fall Festival will be held this coming Sunday, October 28 at Reeves Rogers School from 3:30-5:30. The meal will be BBQ Pork, Hot Dogs, Chips, Cookies, and Drinks. Admission Wristbands are $5.00 per person or a maximum of $20.00 per family.  Rev. Touchton tells us that there will be some reserved parking right at the school for our older adults.

SAGES will leave the church at 8:00 A.M. on Wednesday, November 7 to go for breakfast at the Midway Diner in Deason, Tennessee, near the Shelbyville Airport. Breakfast will be Dutch treat. Cost for the bus ride is $5.00.

The next meeting of the SAGES Ministry Team is November 12 at 9:30 in Room 503- 505.

Remember, too, that SAGES will leave at 10:00 on Friday, November 16 to have lunch in Bell Buckle and visit the Southern Charms Boutiques and tour the town. Cost for the bus is $5.00.

The SAGES enjoyed a cookout and program on Friday, October 19 in the St. Mark’s Banquet Room. Everyone had steak, chicken, and hamburgers which were grilled out by the SAGES team. There were baked potatoes. The trimmings were provided by the SAGES themselves. Ross Moore, humorist, musician, and entertainer, was the program.

Many other activities are planned for the rest of the year including our Senior Serenity Luncheon for Shut-ins and Families on December 8, and Christmas at Beersheba on December 11. Please keep an eye and ear on the newsletter and public announcements for more details.
Youth News

This past Sunday, we had a blast playing some ultimate frisbee outside in the crisp weather followed by completing a service project for Ms. Johnson’s 6 th grade class at Reeves Rogers Elementary. Thanks to everyone who participated in giving back to our community while having fun as a group!

Don’t forget that this Sunday, October 28 th is St. Mark’s Fall Festival held at Reeves Rogers. There will not be Sunday night youth on that day, but the youth will again be doing the popular Haunted Hallway at the Festival! We will meet at Reeves Rogers that Sunday at 1:30pm to get things set up for the Hallway and can use plenty of help. Any questions? Please ask one of the adult leaders. We hope to see all of you at the Fall Festival!

We are going to Cedar Crest this year for Fall Retreat, November 9 th -11 th ! The weekend will be filled with activities like a high-ropes course, campfires, plenty of free time, fellowship, and learning about our journeys as Christians. The cost for the retreat is $110, and sign-up sheets with more details are in the hallway by the Youth Center. This is always one of our best events of the year where we grow closer together as a group, establish lasting relationships, and deepen our faith while having a good time. We hope everyone is able to come! As always, if there are any issues with paying for the trip, please let one of the leaders know - scholarships are available. 2018 Red Bird Christmas for Kids
The Red Bird Missionary Conference is located in southeastern Kentucky and serves the three poorest counties in the nation. Again this year, St. Mark’s Missions Team is sponsoring the adoption of kids from Red Bird Mission’s pre-k, kindergarten and first grade to provide their Christmas. We spend $125 on each of the 40 children, the majority of which will be spent for their basic needs (i.e., warm clothes, hat, scarf, gloves). The remainder of the money is spent on school supplies, games, and toys requested by the kids.

WHO DOES SHOPPING?  Karen Alexander

WHO DOES WRAPPING?  You can do your own wrapping if you would like or Karen will arrange for elves to wrap for you.

DEADLINES:  Contact Karen Alexander (615-477-4244) by 11/1/2018 and let her know how many kids you would like to adopt. Karen will have gifts to you no later than 11/25/18 if you would like to wrap your own. Gifts will be delivered to Red Bird by December 14, 2018 by St. Mark's volunteers.

Bedding Needed - Please consider donating to the church for our Way of Hope monthly hosting any throws, twin, full and/or queen size blankets - twin sheets are helpful too. There have been times a lady new to the program will arrive to stay overnight at St Mark's and not have any bedding. If we can have a few blankets on hand it is very helpful and can be a real blessing to the women and children of The Way of Hope. Thank you for your continued prayers and support.

St. Mark's Charge Conference  will be held on Sunday, November 18 th at 7:00 p.m. during our regular Church Council meeting time.
