From the Pastor...

This Sunday is Baptism of the Lord Sunday, the day when we remember Jesus' baptism. Some of you may be asking, "Why was Jesus, the sinless son of God, baptized?" I'll attempt to answer that question this weekend based on Luke's retelling of the event.

As a response to the Word, we will have an opportunity to remember our own baptisms and we won't let the fact that some of us don't remember our baptisms to stop us... just as we don't stop remembering birthdays despite the fact that we don't remember our birth.

For those who have not been baptized, Baptism of the Lord Sunday is a great day to say yes to the God who's already said yes to you, to confess sin, to profess faith in Christ, and to respond in faith and love by being baptized. If you're interested in being baptized this Sunday or if you have any questions about baptism, please contact Rev. Dr. Jim, Rev. Martha, or me.

It is a privilege to serve God as one of your clergy.

Light to the Nations

The season of Epiphany, which began last Sunday, is all about light and revelation. It celebrates how Jesus was revealed to the world as God's Son and as Savior for all people, not just a specific group. That's why our Epiphany Sermon Series is entitled "A Light to the Nations."

The word "Epiphany" means "a sudden realization" or "aha moment," and during this season, we will celebrate how Jesus came to bring hope and light to everyone. We'll also be invited to share the light of Christ with the world.

Current Plans for Sunday Morning

We plan to have in-person worship on Sunday. Look for emails, social media posts, and/or text messages this weekend about whether or not we'll have Christian Education classes.

Snow Shovelers Needed

If you are available to help shovel snow off of our sidewalks on Saturday morning, please call the church at 615-893-3455 or email bethany@stmarkstn.org. We already have someone who plans to clear the parking lot (N Rutherford side).

Alternative to In-Person Worship

We trust you'll use your own best judgment about in-person Sunday attendance as there may still be patches of snow and ice. For those who decide not to worship in-person, please join us online at www.youtube.com/stmarkstn or www.facebook.com/stmarkstn

St. Mark’s UMC

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Monday - Friday, St. Mark's follows the Murfreesboro City Schools (MCS) system in determining whether the church office will be open and church-wide events held.

When MCS are closed, the church office will be closed and all church-wide activities will be canceled. Small groups and other gatherings may occur at the discretion of leadership.

Due to the potential for inclement weather this weekend, we have pre-empted to move Sunday's Adult Christian Education Event and Grand Sweep Celebration Luncheon to January 26.

At all times, please check St. Mark’s social media and/or your email for the most up-to-date information in the event of inclement weather, especially on weekends

THE REVELATION

ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION EVENT

Sunday, January 26, 9:15 – 10:15 a.m.

in the Sanctuary with

The Reverend Rebecca Abts Wright, Ph.D.

We are excited to welcome back The Rev. Dr. Wright, C. K. Benedict Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Hebrew at Sewanee School of theology, as our final speaker for The Grand Sweep Series, sharing a basic interpretation of what many consider the Bible’s most perplexing book, The Revelation to John. While this special presentation is especially for those participating in The Grand Sweep, all adults and classes are invited and encouraged to attend.

Dr. Wright, who holds degrees from American University, Wesley Theological Seminary, and Yale University, is an ordained United Methodist minister whose primary objective is for students to encounter and enjoy the depths of biblical study. She uses a variety of teaching methods, introducing her students to a wide range of perspectives, both ancient and contemporary, "traditional" and "non-traditional," for encountering biblical texts. Her teaching style not only helps students understand scripture in its historical context, but also how it is relevant to the church today. Her presentation at St. Mark’s will be interactive; you are invited to submit questions ahead of time to martha@stmarkstn.org.

The Grand Sweep Closing Celebration

THANK YOU FROM THE BEDFORD COUNTY JAIL

Before Christmas, Robin Stone delivered 350 pre-stamped Christmas cards assembled at Wednesday Night Together to inmates at the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center and the Bedford County Detention Center. Lt. Gentry said the inmates at Bedford had been asking if they were coming!

A beautiful hand-drawn thank you note was received from the jail, which said, “Thank you for bringing the light of Christ into a dark place.  Merry Christmas from all the guys at Bedford County Jail!”

Look for the artwork from the card to be featured on the front of St.Mark's worship bulletin during the January sermon series!

New Adult Studies in 2025

As a disciple of Jesus Christ, do you seek to:

- Deepen your spiritual walk with Christ?

- Grasp the Gospel story of Jesus and his disciples?

- Listen to and respond to God’s call as an individual, a family, and a church?

In the year ahead, as a means of deepening our mutual walk with Christ, our personal, daily spiritual practice, and our faithfulness, mission, and ministry as the Body of Christ, you are invited to read and study through the scriptures in an intentional, systematic, and devotional way.

We will be offering 8-week studies on each of the Gospels, which will allow us time to savor and enjoy the stories of Jesus and his disciples more fully. These studies, called “Books of Faith,” will include:

           Matthew in February and March

           Mark in April and May

           Luke in August and September

           John in October and November

Each study offers a guide for reading a few chapters of the Gospel each week and continues the devotional focus we have enjoyed with The Grand Sweep. To participate as a reader or serve as a reflection group leader, please sign up in the Foyer or email martha@stmarkstn.org

We are also offering the opportunity to read through the Bible using The Grand Sweep, especially for those who are new to our congregation or who missed out on reading in 2024. To participate in a small group or serve as a reflection group leader, sign up in the Foyer, or send an email to martha@stmarkstn.org.

The number and times of reflection groups for both studies will be determined by your interest, so register today!

St. Mark's Brings Christmas to Reeves Rogers

Just before Christmas break, Santa's elves from St. Mark's delivered 23 mesh bags full of playground toys to Reeves Rogers Elementary School (one per class). Because of the generosity toward this ministry, we were also able to give to the CDC classes! We also distributed gift cards to all the teachers and full-time employees, and delivered 30 snack bags to be taken home by children who would face food insecurity during the holidays.

Thanks to all the Adult classes who contributed several thousand dollars to this project, to the Food Bank Team who bought food and stuffed snack bags, to our Wednesday Night Together helpers who assembled all the playground bags, to David Forrest, Pam Forrest, and Ron Jackson for blowing up over 100 balls, to Trish Clark who created and sewed the labels on the mesh bags, and to our Church Partnership Team for coordinating this tremendous local mission. What a wonderful team effort!

Thanks also to our delivery team, Margie and Frank Jennings, David Cowan, Jeff Henry, and Rev. Martha Touchton. The team went room to room delivering the bags and wishing the children a Merry Christmas from St. Mark’s UMC. The children were so excited to receive their playground toys! They jumped up and down, yelled their thanks you’s, and offering big hugs. The teachers and other staff were also very appreciative.

Jennifer Hall, a St. Mark’s member and 2nd grade teacher at Reeves Rogers, said, “Thank you so much for all you do for our community! We feel so fortunate to have your support! Our school is very grateful!”

And thanks to Reeves Rogers for the shout-out that has been on their marquis all through winter break!

Preschool Ministry Updates

Praying everyone had a blessed Christmas and New Year! Samantha and I are happy to be back from Christmas Break. We are so excited to see the children and their families return from break. We have some updates we would like to share with you.

2025-2026 Enrollment moved to February 2025. Enrollment for next school year, 2025-2026, will take place Feb. 3-6 rather than in March. The St. Mark's Preschool Ministry Board has approved a 10% tuition increase and revision of the extended care program to require contracted per-semester commitment for use rather than an as-needed attendance-based fee. The annual registration and materials fee will remain $100 for a 2-day program and $125 for a 3 or 5 day program.
