From the Senior Pastor...

A new sermon series begins Sunday that we're calling "Road Trip with God." This series is inspired by the same stories that our children will be hearing during Vacation Bible School next month.

I have two hopes for the series. First, I want the entire church to know what our kids will be learning at VBS. My prayer is that this will spark meaningful conversations around dinner tables, in cars, at bedtime, and in our church hallways. Second, I've invited our program staff to join me in preaching these messages. I want our children and our families to know that nurturing the faith of our children isn't just a job for one person or one area of ministry. It's something that our entire staff believes in deeply; each of us want to walk beside our kids as they grow in faith.

Hope to see you this Sunday. It is a privilege to serve God as one of your clergy.

June Communion Rail Offering

The June 1st Communion Rail offering will go towards the medical/living expenses of Amber Den Exter. Amber, who has been a cello player for our cantata orchestra for years, was involved in a serious auto accident just days after our Palm Sunday cantata. This accident left her with extensive paralysis and she will be unable to work for the foreseeable future. Please join the choir and staff in praying for Amber.

As part of your preparation for the sacrament of Holy Communion,

you are invited to donate canned and dry foods

to St. Mark's Food Bank every 1st Sunday.

Collection tubs will be located just outside the Sanctuary, or you can bring your donation to the bins in the Narthex or Room 407/409.

The next Communion Sunday is June 1st!

Bring pop-top cans of potatoes, corn, or green beans!

College Ministry

All college students and friends are invited to be part of the College group, meeting Sundays, 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. in Room 502 across from the church office. A light breakfast is served, everyone is welcome, bring a friend!

Summer Office Hours

Beginning in June and continuing through August, the church office will be closed on Fridays. This change, approved by the Staff Parish Relations Committee, is designed to offer our staff greater flexibility during the summer months. When possible, staff may complete their weekly responsibilities earlier in the week and enjoy a longer weekend. Others may choose to work on Fridays in a quieter setting, using the day for planning, study, or preparation without the need to keep regular office hours. As always, a clergy person will be available and responsive (by phone or appointment). The SPRC appreciates your understanding as we take this small step to support the health, focus, and effectiveness of our ministry team.

A Blooming Blessing

We’re excited to share that wildflowers have been planted in the median of the North Rutherford Blvd entrance and just outside the two main sanctuary doors—thanks to the help of our wonderful children and the generous leadership and support of Rev. Bill Campbell. Please express your appreciation to them when you see them around church and town.

Wildflower gardens offer more than just a beautiful view—they support pollinators like bees and butterflies, improve soil health, and remind us of the beauty God grows from even the smallest seeds. We give thanks for this blooming act of stewardship and the hands that made it possible!

PAPERBACK BOOK DRIVE FOR RUTHERFORD COUNTY’S CORRECTIONAL

WORK CENTER

May 4 – 25, 2025

The Rutherford County Workhouse on South Church Street houses over 200 people who have committed minor offenses and are serving sentences of less than one year. This facility houses men and women who go out into the community every day to perform service work within Rutherford County, from picking up garbage on the side of the road to cleaning the courthouse and other County and State buildings.

Offenders return to the facility in the late afternoon to eat, shower, and have recreational time. With 40-50 people in each unit and only two TVs, it can get very loud! Most prefer to select a book to read from the cart and take it to their bunk for the evening.

For many inmates, the books offered at the Workhouse are the first available to them in their adult lives. For some, this is the first opportunity they have had to select and read a book for pleasure, offering an escape from their environment. Many offenders take GED classes while incarcerated; our "Paperback Book Drive" helps increase overall literacy and brings the enlightenment and broadening of perspective that only literature can provide.

In addition to gently used paperback books for adults, we are also collecting paperback books for young people ages 9 - 17 to be delivered to the RuCo Juvenile Correctional Center.

Please bring your donations to the collection bins in the Narthex. Large boxes of books should be brought to the church office. All donations are due Sunday, May 25th.

Missions Updates

Impact children’s lives for Christ

Read • Give • Pray

The joyful sights and sounds of Project Transformation (PT) day-campers will fill soon two Rutherford County host sites. You can impact children’s lives when you read, give and pray for these campers. Starting June 3, campers will participate in a variety of activities designed for literacy, social-emotional learning and personal enrichment. Please help share the love of Christ in these ways:

READ with PT campers during one or both weeks St. Mark’s will serve: June 3 – 5 at Smyrna First UMC and July 21 – 24 at Murfreesboro First Cumberland Presbyterian. Or, help with family fun night on Thursday, July 17. Sign up to serve.

GIVE online to offset the cost of supplies and books for campers. Choose Missions (fund) > Local Missions (sub-fund), and note “Project Transformation.” Or, send a check this week to St. Mark’s marked “PT.”

PRAY for PT campers, student interns, staff and churches throughout the summer. Thank you for helping share Christ’s love with children in Rutherford County through Project Transformation.

SERVING IN MISSION IN GUATEMALA

I recently returned from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala where I joined with staff and members of the MTSU Wesley Foundation including Beth Morris, Rev. John Weaver, Delaney Reynolds, and Katelynn Finchum, in a week of mission and ministry with ACD Guatemala (https://acdguatemala.org/who-we-are/). While the Wesley Foundation has sponsored several mission trips to ACD in previous years, they had not been there for two years and many changes and improvements had been made in the meantime.  I was excited to be invited to travel with them and see what the possibilities might be for St. Mark’s to become more deeply involved in this international mission.

Our team participated in five mission projects in three days: pouring of an 8’ x8’ slab of concrete flooring, delivery and installation of a EcoStove with outdoor ventilation, delivery and installation of an EcoFilter to provide clean water, painting a school classroom, and leading Bible lessons for about 45 children. The concrete slabs, stoves, and water filters aim to improve the health and sanitation of their recipients, enabling families to have clean water and cleaner, safer cooking facilities. Amidst these tasks, we sought to lift up the recipients’ dignity, and to generously express God’s love and hope to each person with whom we were in contact.

We also had opportunities to learn about ACD’s healthy cooking classes, medical clinics, and school scholarships, and took part in several enrichment experiences, including learning to make tortillas and guacamole, touring a local Chocolate Museum and factory, visiting ancient Mayan ruins, and shopping in Antigua. All these experiences helped us have a greater understanding of the local culture and the blessings and needs of our neighbors in Guatemala.

If you would like to learn more about this trip and how you or your class or group might be in mission in Guatemala, I would be glad to share my experiences in the coming weeks!

Peace,
