From the Pastor...

I hope you're planning to spend Valentine's Day at St. Mark's. When we realized that Valentine's Day falls on a Friday this year, making it even more difficult to get into a restaurant to spend a special evening with your love, we began envisioning a romantic evening at the church, with a good meal provided by Sweet Addiction, instrumental music as well as live entertainment, and even an opportunity for those interested to renew their wedding vows. And if that isn't enough, all proceeds from the evening will support our children's ministry.

The deadline to sign up is February 7th and I sure hope I see your name on the reservations list.

It is a privilege to serve God as one of your clergy.

Tommy

February Communion Rail Offering: Scouting Ministry

Our Communion Rail Offering on Sunday, February 2, 2025 will go to support the Scouting Ministries of St. Mark's.

For those of you who will be worshiping online this Sunday, you're invited to prepare elements for communion at home. If you don't have grape juice and bread, you can use any simple food and drink available; the important thing is your intention and reverence in using these items as symbols of the bread and cup and what these things say about God's great love for us.

Light to the Nations

The season of Epiphany is all about light and revelation. It celebrates how Jesus was revealed to the world as God's Son and as Savior for all people, not just a specific group. That's why our Epiphany Sermon Series is entitled "A Light to the Nations."

The word "Epiphany" means "a sudden realization" or "aha moment," and during this season, we will celebrate how Jesus came to bring hope and light to everyone. We'll also be invited to share the light of Christ with the world.

News!

Let Your Light Shine

Last Sunday, Rev. Ward shared a beautiful sermon about sharing the light of Christ with others, then in his invitation, alluded to an unexpected gift that had been given to our church. Here’s the rest of the story.

A few weeks ago, I reached out to Matthew Joseph, owner of Simply Pure Sweets on the Square, and asked if he could bake some special loaves of bread for our church to give for a special occasion. I met Matt a few years ago when he was a speller for the Read to Succeed Celebrity Spelling Bee, for which I have served as the Emcee and Pronouncer for several years. Matthew won the spelling bee that year, and for the past few years has served as Head Judge of the bee.

Matthew asked about the occasion, so I shared with him that The Grand Sweep was about reading through the Bible in a year and how we were thanking our teachers for “breaking the bread of life” for us. He said his best bread was a 2 lb. sourdough loaf which sounded wonderful to me, so I ordered 12 loaves to be fresh baked for pick up Saturday morning.

When I arrived, I was astounded at how large and beautiful the loaves were! After he had them all wrapped up, I handed him my St. Mark’s credit card to pay, and much to my surprise, Matthew said, “These are on me today, with thanks for all you and St. Mark’s do for our community.”

I thought I was doing something good by shopping at a small business, and in return that small business did something good for us!

I had that bread in my car for several hours on Saturday, and I’m still enjoying its incredible aroma!  When we serve our community, offer kindness and service to others, and share the light God has given us in Christ, it comes back to us ten-fold. What else could smell so sweet?!!

Boy Scout BBQ

Let the Boy Scouts of St. Mark’s Troop 398 take care of your cooking on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 9th. We’ve smoked our own pork and turkey for over 25 years! You can choose from pulled pork $12/pound and/or sliced turkey $15/pound (order extra and freeze it for a treat later on!) Whole Boston Butts are available for $45 and boneless turkey half-breasts for $40. Ribs are $20/slab. To complete your feast, we offer 16 ounce sides of Cole slaw and baked beans for $5 each. Please remember to place your orders in advance by Feb. 5th, since only limited quantities will be available for sale on Feb. 9th. Orders are currently being taken by troop members. Scouts will be available to take orders in the narthex after the Sunday service. St. Mark's Grand Sweep Finale

In 2024, more than 80 of St. Mark’s members and friends journeyed together from January to December and from Genesis to Revelation. Thanks be to God!

More than 50 of those disciples celebrated the close of The Grand Sweep emphasis with a special luncheon on Sunday, January 26th. Each “graduate” received a beautiful Grand Sweep bookmark, the original of which was painted by Becky Waldrop, as well as a pocket prayer shawl crocheted by Darlene Brigner.  Rev. Tommy Ward shared a letter of congratulation from Bishop David Graves of the Tennessee/ Western Kentucky Conference, and Rev. Touchton honored several readers with “superlatives.” Adult Education Coordinator Sherry Galloway presented our teachers with a beautiful loaf of sourdough bread from Simply Spure Sweets, thanking them for breaking the “Bread of Life” for us.

We could not have made this journey without the strong leadership of our capable and dedicated teachers to whom we are eternally grateful, including:

Sunday Morning Class:

Rev. Tommy Ward

Rev. Martha Touchton

Sunday Afternoon Class:

Hannah Pratt

Zach Pratt

Wednesday Night Together Class:

Dr. Debbie Church

Dr. Lenoir Culbertson

Dr. Barry Culbertson

Dr. Fred Hembree

Rev. Loyd Mabry

Dr. Jim Clardy

Rev. Mike Waldrop

Friday Class:

Claudia Hunter

Dr. Jim Clardy

It was a joy to share this journey as a church family, to hear the questions and conversations being talked about in our hallways and classrooms, to witness the faithfulness and discipline of our readers, especially those who fell behind and worked to catch up, and then to celebrate the completion of our mutual journey.

My constant prayer was that this experience would help us be better disciples:

-         People who pray and read the Bible every day.

-         People who are present to God and one another in worship, in study, and in their daily lives

-         People who generously share their God-given gifts to build up the community of faith

-         People who hear and respond to God’s call to serve in our faith community and to take the ministry of Christ’s church beyond its walls and into the world

-         People who tell others what their relationship to God and the Church means to them

As Methodists, these are the methods we are called to use to help ourselves and one another grow in our faith and discipleship. Even though this emphasis has ended in our church, it should never end in our lives. May we all continue on this faithful path!

Mission Team Updates

LOCAL FOOD MINISTRY

Additional shelving has been purchased and placed in the Cornerstone classroom to accommodate more food donations and keep food organized for packing. Monthly food offerings on communion Sundays help keep the food pantry well stocked.

The Local Food Ministry has given away approximately 100 food boxes since June 1, 2024, which is about 15 boxes per month. Food boxes are also offered during furniture deliveries twice a month.

In addition to the food boxes, twenty-five food bags were prepared for Reeves Rogers students (on free lunches) to eat during their fall break.

We have a great team of about 10 volunteers who help maintain 25-30 boxes on hand at all times. If you are interested in volunteering with the local food ministry, please contact Stacy Richards at slrichards67@gmail.com. If you are interested in financially supporting the ministry, please write your check to St. Mark’s UMC and designate “Local Food Ministry”.

FURNITURE MINISTRY

During 2024, 100 furniture deliveries were made in the Murfreesboro area. These deliveries were made to individuals and/or families who were victims of flood, fire, tornado, hurricane, and domestic violence, etc.

The Furniture Ministry will continue to run two Saturdays per month in 2025. If you are interested in volunteering on the truck or donating your gently used furniture, please contact Karen Alexander at (615)707-3166. If you are interested in financially supporting the ministry, please write your check to St. Mark’s UMC and designate “Furniture Ministry”.

BEGIN AGAIN MINISTRY

Approximately 25-35 boxes have been assembled each year usually as part of our Wednesday Night Together program. The boxes are given out as part of the Furniture Ministry. They contain kitchen essentials, including but not limited to dishes, silverware, pots/pans, and utensils.

During 2024, fourteen begin again boxes and pots and pans were given out. If you are interested in financially supporting this ministry, please write your check to St. Mark’s UMC and designate “Begin Again Boxes”. If you are interested in participating in assembling begin again boxes, please contact Sherrie Gilliam.

RED BIRD FOOD

Please see attached thank you letter that was sent to St. Mark’s from Tim Crawford with Red Bird. He expressed thanks for the food boxes that we have delivered during 2024.

On January 27, 2025, 2,000 pounds of sweet potatoes were delivered by St. Mark’s to Red Bird for distribution with food boxes and other commodities.

Thank You Letter from Tim Crawford with Red Bird
