From the Pastor
Rev. Tommy Ward

The Tower of Pisa is a freestanding bell tower known for its unintended tilt. Apparently, the ground on which the tower was built was too soft to provide a solid foundation, causing it to lean. It's interesting to note that the tower doesn't lean as much today as it did when it was completed in the 14th century thanks to intentional efforts to stabilize the tower before it collapsed.

On Thursday of this week, Tennesseans will take to the polls to vote for, among other things, the Democratic and Republican nominees for governor. If you're like me, you have your leanings as to which candidate you'll support in the primary. Sometimes our leanings can worsen to the point that things become unstable for ourselves, our community, and our world. When that happens, it's important for us to consider our foundation.

One of my favorite hymns in "My Hope is Built." On Thursday, I want my vote and my hope to reflect the solid foundation of my faith in Christ. And if those I vote for don't win, Christ will still be "my hope and stay."Rev.

Youth News

We had a great time at Summer Sizzler this past weekend! We had three members win CCYM positions while there: Madison Beckman; President, Georgia Touchton; Vice President, and Helen Grace Daniel; Secretary. Congratulations for sweeping the elections!

We have already started our Youth Week events. Monday was rafting the Ocoee. The other events are Messy Games at church on Tuesday, volleyball at Sportscom on Wednesday, bingo at The Rutherford on Thursday morning, followed by Way of Hope meal preparation Thursday evening, trivia night at church on Friday, and explore Nashville day on Saturday. Check the website or flyers for details on times.

Speaking of Way of Hope on Thursday, everyone is encouraged to help prepare meals and serve the people staying at St. Mark's - this is a great opportunity to serve the community and make a difference in the world!

Sunday will be promotion day followed by the End of Summer party at MTSU in the evening! Things start at 4:30 and will be over at 7:30. Several options will be available, including indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, and other activities! The main course for dinner will be provided. Those with last names starting with A-H bring a side dish, I-Q bring a dessert, and R-Z bring 2-liter drinks. Our new 7th graders will be joining us, and this is always a fun event! Hope to see everyone there - friends are welcome!!

Finally, we will have a parent's meeting in the next few weeks to cover all the fall activities we are planning and answer any questions parents may have. Look out for details on the exact date.

Positive Parenting Program

The way we parent our children moment-to-moment, day-to-day has a huge impact on a child's future behavior and health. Despite this fact, very few parents receive training for the most important job they will ever have-being a parent. The Family Center works alongside parents to build connection and empathy with their children. Parents learn about the developmental stages of their child, strategies for modifying behavior, and how to connect with their child in a deeper way. Who benefits from attending a parenting group? Everyone!

Positive Parenting  uses education, skill building, and personal insights to help moms, dads, or other family caregivers be the best parents possible! The Family Center is excited to partner with St. Mark's United Methodist to offer an 8-week Positive Parenting Program. Parents also have an opportunity to bring their children during this time. While the parents learn new skills, our wonderful children's coaches work with the children to build their knowledge on a variety of topics like emotions and safety.

The program will begin, Thursday, September 6th. Registration link will open on August 16th.

We invite you to join us or invite someone you know! For more information on programs, becoming a donor, volunteering, or registering please call 615-890-4673 or visit familycentertn.org.
