Pastoral Note

Dear Friends,

It is with heavy hearts that we share the following message from the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota, concerning the death of former St. Thomas interim Rector, The Rt. Rev. Craig Anderson.

Please keep his Liz and the entire Anderson family in your prayers.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant, Craig. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

(Book of Common Prayer, p. 499)

It is with sadness that the School of Theology reports the death of the Rt. Rev. Dr. Craig Anderson,T’75, H’87, a School of Theology graduate and former professor, and eighth bishop of the Diocese of South Dakota. Bishop Anderson graduated from the School of Theology with honors in 1975 and was ordained to the priesthood the same year. Anderson continued his education at Vanderbilt University, earning both a Master of Arts (1981) and a Ph.D. in theology (1985). While in graduate school Anderson served as a assistant chaplain at All Saints’ Chapel in Sewanee. Beginning in 1978 and prior to his 1984 election in South Dakota, Anderson served on the faculty of the School of Theology as the C.K. Benedict Chair of Pastoral Theology. After stepping down as diocesan bishop in 1993, Anderson continued to serve the Episcopal Church including as dean of General Seminary (1993-1997); headmaster of St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire (1997-2005); assistant bishop in the Diocese of Idaho; interim rector of St. Thomas Church in Sun Valley, Idaho; non-stipendiary rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Parish on Orcas Island, Washington; and as assistant bishop in the Diocese of Olympia from 2007 to 2014. Bishop Anderson was known for his work in the areas of conservation, environmental stewardship, human rights, Indigenous ministries, and ecumenism. Please keep Bishop Anderson and his family in your prayers.

Rector's Discussion Group Begins February 4

Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again

By, Rachel Held Evans

About the Book (Amazon):

Undaunted by the Bible's most difficult passages and unafraid to ask the hard questions, Evans wrestles through the process of doubting, imagining, and debating the mysteries surrounding Scripture. Discover alongside Evans that the Bible is not a static text, but a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that can equip us and inspire us to join God's loving and redemptive work in the world.

Breaking Bread Together

New Groups are Forming

Breaking Bread Together groups are comprised of 8-10 parishioners who gather monthly for conversation and fellowship. Some groups meet for dinner, others for brunch after church on a Sunday; it’s up to each group to make their own plans. This can be a great way to make some new friends and have deeper conversations than you might at coffee hour. If you are not currently in a BBT Group and would like to join one, please email Stefanie at stefanie@stthomassv.org.
