Sherri Luhr Joins Vestry

The St. Thomas Vestry welcomes Sherri Luhr, serving in the seat vacated by Barbara Dwyer.

I grew up on the beaches of Southern California, and after college, began my career as an art director in the advertising industry. I met my husband Dave at an an ad agency in L.A.  Shortly thereafter, an intriguing job opportunity arose at an agency in Oregon, who’s primary client was a budding new shoe company called Nike. We considered it to be a two to three year adventure.

That adventure turned into thirty two years of living, working, and raising our two children in the magnificent beauty of the Northwest. We immersed ourselves in our community, our church, the easy access to everything outdoors. The changing of the seasons was a new and exhilarating experience.

Our connection to Sun Valley began in 1994, when we purchased a vacation spot where our family could ski in winters, fish and bike in summers. It wasn’t until 2020, when Dave retired, that we set out on another adventure—moving to Sun Valley as full time residents.

Among our top priorities was finding a new church home. Although Dave’s childhood experience was in the Episcopalian tradition, mine was not. So I wanted to “shop around a little bit” before committing. I knew we had found our church home at St Thomas when I opened the bulletin on that first Sunday visit and read the mission statement. I wanted to be a part of this faith community that was welcoming to all, whose priority it was to be the hands and feet of Jesus in serving others, and a community that was not afraid to wrestle with tough theological questions and concepts.

St Thomas did not disappoint. We have found this community to be just what it said it was in that mission statement—loving, inclusive, spiritually nurturing.

Maundy Thursday Agape* Meal and Holy Eucharist with Stripping of the Altar - Thursday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m.

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples,

if you have love for one another.” John 13:35

The Thursday of Holy Week is a night we come together in community to commemorate and experience Jesus’ final teachings about love, as demonstrated in washing his disciples’ feet and in the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper.

This year, we will begin our Maundy Thursday service with a simple meal of soup and bread in The Parish Hall. Then, we will process upstairs for the Eucharist. Finally, we will strip the altar and enter into the darkness of Christ’s passion.

*Agape is a Greek word for love. Agape, as opposed to eros, characterizes love as an act of service and humility before others.

Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again

By, Rachel Held Evans

About the Book (Amazon):

Undaunted by the Bible's most difficult passages and unafraid to ask the hard questions, Evans wrestles through the process of doubting, imagining, and debating the mysteries surrounding Scripture. Discover alongside Evans that the Bible is not a static text, but a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that can equip us and inspire us to join God's loving and redemptive work in the world.
