You’re writing your life story and you want:

  • Professional guidance to write your story with power and skill.
  • A supportive community of writers on the same journey.
  • To meet published authors who have written memoirs to learn how they did it.

As a member of the My Life Story community in addition to workshops, a reading list, coaching, and evaluation of your work by me and feedback from your fellow writers you will meet published memoirists via live Zoom interviews and discussion events.

How My Life Story Works:

  • We’ll meet twice monthly for two-hour writing workshops and group discussions of your narrative submission.
  • You will have a reading list of classic and contemporary memoirs.
  • Each My Life Story community member will have an individual coaching session with me.
  • You will have exclusive access to recorded interviews I have conducted with award-winning writers including Dr. Ibram Kendi (How to be an Anti-Racist) and Pulitzer-prize winner Mitchell S. Jackson.
  • You will get my written evaluation of your writing.
  • I will provide a detailed written evaluation of your final writing project: A submission of up to forty pages from your memoir.

Workshop discussion of your writing will enhance and broaden your understanding of your story.

Meeting published memoirists via live Zoom interviews will provide insight into your publishing options.

This six-month Memoir Intensive will:

  • Provide you with a supportive community.
  • Strengthen and enhance your writing skills.
  • Give you an inside look at how the publishing world works.

Tuition payments can be made in one payment or three installments.

A little about me ...
I am the award-winning author of over 20 works of fiction and nonfiction, including my memoir, Migrations of the Heart, and my most recent novel The Wide Circumference of Love.

In my role as teacher, coach, and editor, I have worked with many prominent award-winning writers including political analyst Donna Brazile, (Cooking With Grease Stirring the Pots in America), novelists Nicole Dennis-Benn, (Here Comes the Sun and Patsy), Tope Folarin, (A Particular Kind of Black Man), Tracy McGhee, (Melting the Blues), Sadeqa Johnson, (Yellow Wife and Second House From the Corner), short story writer Camille Acker, (Training School for Negro Girls), and memoirists Karen Gray Houston, author of Daughter of the Boycott Carrying on a Montgomery Family’s Civil Rights Legacy and Nita Wiggins author of Civil Rights Baby, My Story of Race, Sports, and Breaking Barriers in American Journalism and Leslie C. Youngblood, YA author of Love Like Sky and Forever This Summer.

I have taught creative writing in the MFA Creative Writing Programs at George Mason University and Virginia Commonwealth University and served as Writer-in-Residence at numerous colleges and universities, including the University of the District of Columbia and Johns Hopkins University. As a literary activist, I co-founded The Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation.
