For Officer Chris Pratl, leadership is not just something you learn. It is something you live. A proud GovState alumnus, Officer Pratl earned his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in 2011 and graduated on May 16, 2026 with a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice, making history as the first student to complete the program under the university’s newly implemented Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) pathway for law enforcement.
Officer Pratl’s journey reflects both dedication and innovation. Through an extensive evaluation of his professional experience, including advanced certifications, leadership training and crisis intervention work, he earned the maximum allowable CPL credits. In doing so, he helped pave the way for future law enforcement professionals to translate real-world experience into academic achievement.
Outside the classroom, Officer Pratl serves as a Field Training Officer and Crisis Intervention Team participant, bringing valuable real-world insight into every discussion. His ability to connect theory with practice has made a lasting impact on both his peers and faculty, especially in conversations surrounding ethical policing, community relationships, and mental health response.
Officer Pratl is equally committed to mentorship, regularly supporting undergraduate students and fostering meaningful dialogue around complex issues in criminal justice. He credits Criminal Justice faculty members Dr. Janet Brewer and Professor Bruce Wilson for the support and encouragement that shaped his path, and he carries that same spirit forward in how he shows up for others. His leadership, professionalism, and thoughtful approach to policing represent the future of the field.
Balancing a demanding career, graduate studies, and personal life, Officer Pratl embodies what it means to lead with purpose. His journey is not only a personal achievement. It is a path forward for others to follow.
