Meet Amazing Cover Stars Ava Dorsey, Chief Pet Officer
First of all, congratulations Ava, on the successful launch of Ava’s Pet Palace! What passions inspired your business idea? Tell us about the story of your brand.
Hi, I’m Ava. 15-year-old founder and Chief Pet Officer of Ava’s Pet Palace. Together with my family, we’ve been building a pet wellness and accessories business since 2016.
When I was a little girl, my mom made sure I was eating organic, natural foods. One day I asked: what about Rock (our dog at the time), doesn’t he get organic, natural foods, too?
And from that moment, I started dreaming of a better world for pets, where all pets are royalty.
I’ve always loved animals and believed our pets are family. I create organic and natural treats and accessories for dogs and cats to help them live healthier and happier lives. I’ve been making recipes and baking pet treats in our kitchen using only organic ingredients. Now that my business has grown, I work with co-packers and my treats are now USDA certified organic and all natural.
My business really took off in June 2020 thanks to so many people who shared my story on social media. Ava’s Pet Palace has grown into an amazing community of pet parents, animal lovers and animal advocates. We all share the belief that all pets (in our homes, living in shelters, or even homeless) deserve lots of love, kindness, and the best nutrition.
What is your company mission and where do you want to see the company in five years?
My purpose is to make the world better for pets, people and our planet. My start is to make sure all pets and pet parents have access to healthy organic, natural pet treats.
My ultimate goal is to be a world-wide brand! Right now, Ava’s Pet Palace is a fun, health-focused pet treat company passionate about using all organic ingredients with no preservatives in my products. I provide my customers with a sense of pride, confidence and reassurance of being good pet parents by buying their furry friend nourishing treats with high- quality ingredients. My goal is to take this same passion and use it for my entire brand, not just treats. I also want to have Ava's Pet Palace's all over the world. These will be places that are home to everything for pets - a veterinary clinic, pet store, pet hotel, pet restaurant, etc.!
Who supported you in creating/building your business?
I started my business at just 8 years old and I’m 15 now. But I wrote my “job” plan at 6. My parents didn’t initially take my business idea seriously, which I can definitely understand (lol), but after two years of me being very persistent about my idea, they decided to help me make my dream come true and start Ava’s Pet Palace. They’ve supported me throughout the years. We’ve been to countless local shows with the treats we made right in my home. My mom now works for Ava's Pet Palace full time and even though my dad doesn’t help full time he has a huge role in my business too.
Ava’s Pet Palace has grown into a USDA-certified organic baked treat company. Why is it important to the company that its treats use organic ingredients?
I started my business because I wanted to create a healthier world for our pets, planet and people. That's my purpose. I love pets, the same way they love us. That's why my treats are made with simple, organic and all-natural ingredients. To keep pets happy, healthy, and feeling great. My treats are nutritious and delicious. And pet-parent approved!
For me, healthy food has always been about organic and natural ingredients. I've been purposeful about this from the beginning. When I was baking treats in my kitchen, we only bought and used organic ingredients. Now that my business has grown, we work with bigger kitchens and they use only the best, high quality ingredients. And we've worked super hard to finally become USDA Certified Organic!
What has it been like for you juggling school and your own business? How do you enjoy spending your time off from the pet world?
It's a real balancing act to make sure my schoolwork and everything for my business is done. I have to work diligently and be very organized to make sure I do the things that are most important for both. School work is always my top priority though. Since my mom works for Ava’s Pet Palace full time now, it really helps with this. She does a lot of the day-to-day operations of my business, which helps me a lot!
I love to be outdoors, to ride my bike and to take photos of the sunset. I spend a lot of time reading and listening to music. Reading realistic fiction novels is now one of my favorite things to do.
What advice would you give to aspiring young entrepreneurs?
My number one piece of advice is to do something that you love. If you are passionate about what your business is, then it won't feel like work, and you won't get bored with it. And if you hit a bump in the road, keep going! There will always be bumps and challenges on your journey, but if it’s something you truly love and have passion for, you’ll work right through those bumps!
Tell us about your adorable dog Lacy. How did she come into your life?
Lacy is our 5-year-old miniature pincher mix dog that we adopted 4 years ago from Magnificent Mutts and Meow Rescue. I’m so happy and grateful to have Lacy in our family. She enjoys nighttime walks, belly rubs, sneaking on the couch, playing with my sisters and eating Ava’s Pet palace treats! Her favorite treats are my Snappin’ Salmon (formerly Salmon Chips) and Gone Bananas. When we would make the treats in our home she always stood right there while we were making them and waited for them to be finished so that she could be the first one to taste test them. We love Lacy so much!
What brings you joy?
I enjoy giving back whether it’s my time or actually being able to donate my treats and money to animal shelters. Being able to give back makes me happy and motivates me to continue working hard so that in the future I’ll be able to give back so much more. Volunteering in animal shelters has always been something that I’ve been interested in and now that I’m finally old enough, I’m excited to give back in that way too! I also really enjoy spending time outside riding my bike, spending time with friends and family and trying new recipes and of course I absolutely love spending time with our beloved dog, Lacy!
Since this issue is all about summer, how are you celebrating the season?
The summer really flies by for me since I start school in mid-August, but I celebrate the season by being outside as much as possible! Spending time outdoors is one of my favorite things to do and the summer is my favorite time to do that. This year in-person camp was back, and I was able to spend 2 weeks in Virginia with Envision Lead Grow, an organization for young female entrepreneurs, that I’ve been a part of since 2019!

Travel season is here, and for pawrents who like to take their furry family members on trips, here is the latest scoop on traveling with your pets.
According to a recent survey by the American Pet Products Association, it’s estimated that 70% of U.S. households have pets. There has also been a rise in pet travel. People are increasingly including their dogs and cats on their trips. Dog friendly vacations make a fun time for the entire family but traveling with pets takes some advance planning and attention to detail. Here are top tips for an enjoyable road trip with your dog.
Make sure your dog is fully acclimated to and has a positive association with car travel and adventure. This can be accomplished by taking your dog on short car trips and errands around town. You may also want to take them to the park and other areas where they will be introduced to different environments as well as be around new dogs and people. End these trips with playtime, praise, and reward for good behavior in the car.
Prepare for the trip by making a folder with your packing lists, hotels, restaurants, activities, and all the fun things you can do with your dog.
Pet’s Packing List
• Food/treats
• Medication
• Water
• Water and food bowls
• Bedding and towels
• Car seat cover
• Vaccination records
• Flea and tick prevention
• Favorite toys
• Car harness/carrier
• Leash + extension
• Pet first aid kit
• Pick up bags
Medical
• Is your pet healthy and able to travel? Visit your veterinarian for a check-up.
• If all is well, get them up to date on vaccines.
• Get copies of paperwork with proof of vaccines and medical care.
• If your dog requires medication, bring enough for the trip plus a few days extra for the
unexpected.
Identification
• Make sure your dog is micro chipped and has a collar with identification attached.
• Bring photos of your dog with contact information on the back, kept in your purse or
wallet.
Car Trip
• Map out pet friendly stops with the help of GoPetFriendly.com.
• Add markers for possible restaurants, attractions, landmarks, and shops. Also,
research highly rated emergency veterinarian offices in or near cities you will be driving
through.
• Plan to make frequent short stops to exercise, provide water and give your dog
appropriate bathroom breaks.
• Learn your dog's stress signals and make sure to take a break when needed.
• Practice good pet etiquette while out and about.
• Make sure your pet is restrained for safety via a booster seat, carrier, or harness.
• Do not leave your dog in the car at any time.
Lodging & Food
• Make a list of pet friendly accommodations along your route.
• Bringfido.com helps you search for dog-friendly lodging, and it’s available as a mobile
app so you can easily find hotels.
• Bring your dog’s own bedding.
• Check hotels pet rules and places to walk pets for potty breaks and exercise.
• Eat out at dog friendly restaurants.
• Bring containers with your dog’s food.
Activities
Enjoy your time together in your new surroundings. After a long day on the road, your
dog will likely want to be close to what’s familiar and if you’re in a new location the
most familiar thing for them will be you. Be prepared to spend the majority of time
outdoors. Here are some fun things to do:
• Picnic at a dog park
• Relax on a Pet friendly beach
• Take a dog friendly hike
• Go kayaking
• Attend an outdoor music concert
• Visit a state park (Check state parks pet regulations).
If you are traveling by plane with your dog, here are additional things to prepare for:
Check your airline for specific regulations, health documents and fees. Policies vary by airlines.
Get your pet used to its carrier before the flight.
Purchase flights with fewer connections or layovers.
Walk your pet before leaving home and again before checking in. Keep pick-up bags, wee-wee pads, paper towels and hand sanitizer accessible.
Bring favorite non-squeaky toys and treats and play a little before boarding. Keep your pup on your lap if possible and communicate throughout the flight to reduce stress.
If your plans include international travel, contact the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA) for required information.
Here are seven websites that provide helpful information about hotels, restaurants, events, and attractions that welcome pets:

2. PetTravel.com

Named a Best Feel-Good Book by The Washington Post, Piglet is a charming, inspirational memoir about empathy, resilience, kindness, and an adorable deaf blind pink dog. When Connecticut veterinarian Melissa Shapiro gets a call about a tiny deaf blind puppy rescued from a hoarding situation in need of fostering, she doesn’t hesitate to say, “yes.” Little does she know how that decision will transform her, her family, and legions of admirers destined to embrace the saga of the indomitable pink pup. Curious, engaged, and incredibly eager to learn, Piglet quickly became part of the family. What started out as a few simple Facebook posts of Piglet and his pack, rapidly evolved into a global celebration of Piglet’s infectiously positive mindset.

When the pup pack’s owner leaves to bring them a new friend, the dogs wonder who will be coming back to join their family. Will it be a little pooch like Zoey or Annie? Or maybe a big dog with lots of energy like Gina? But when Mom walks in carrying a teeny tiny box making lots of noise, everyone is confused. Pups don’t make sounds like that, and surely the creature is too small and pink to be a dog! And poor little Piglet is shy and nervous, the pack isn’t sure how to say hello. Will the dogs be able to make friends and show Piglet he has a place in his new home? Real-life Instagram sensation Piglet the Pink Puppy inspired this sweet and compassionate picture book Piglet Come Home about the deaf and blind pup finding his forever home.
