Message from Principal Roskos

Week of 10/16/23 to 10/20/23

On behalf of the School Community of Sun Valley High School we would like to express our support for all those who grieve due to the horrific events occurring in Israel. While global conflict is not new, it is disheartening anytime to see such tragedies. Many of us in some way are connected to the communities that are impacted by this and we stand with you in support of the hope of peace. Please know the administration, the counseling team, teachers and staff are here to support our students if they have any questions, concerns or thoughts they need to express in this difficult matter. While it is difficult to grapple with the realities of these tragedies, current events remain at the forefront of why our educational days are so important. Being able to synthesize historical knowledge with the analytic examination of current events is an important life skill for us all to strengthen to grow our wisdom.

Schedule notes for this week: Monday is a Phillies Spirit Day, wear your gear! Friday is a 10:15am early dismissal for school district professional development and Pink out Day for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Please note all guests/visitors must have an ID to enter the school and only important school business should be handled via the school office during school hours. Additionally, non students of SVHS are not permitted to loiter on school property.

Finally, please ensure you scroll through this entire newsletter as there is so much information on the happenings around SVHS! We continue to thank you for your continued support making SVHS a great place to be!

Thank you,

Principal, John Paul Roskos

This Thursday, October 19th, Barksdale Studios will be here to take pictures of any student that missed the September date. Also, any families that would like to have retakes that day, just bring the original photo package you had done and turn it in to the photographers that and have your picture taken again. Even if you are not purchasing photos, we encourage all students to have their photo taken yearly.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Delaware County Healthcare Trust encourages school districts to sponsor a PINK day for their employees to encourage everyone to raise awareness for getting regular checkups and monitoring for cancer. In the United States, over 300,000 people will be diagnosed with some form of breast cancer while 43,000 will lose their battle. One in eight women will be diagnosed in their lifetime. And men can be affected too.

Sun Valley has chosen Friday, October 20 for our PINK Day. We are encouraging everyone to wear PINK to raise awareness and support this campaign.

FRESHMAN ACADEMY FIELD TRIP

The Freshman Academy is planning a field trip to see A Christmas Carol in Philadelphia at the Walnut Street Theater.  The show is December 8th, but payment will be due October 27th. Stay tuned for additional information and permission slips.

ATTENTION STUDENTS

Being on time for school is being in your first period classroom when the bell rings at 7:30. Once the bell rings, anyone who is not in the classroom may be marked late by their teacher.  If you swipe your ID in at the front door at 7:29 or before, and walk in to the classroom after the bell, you are still late to class and may be marked as late.

Once the 7:30 bell rings, if you have not swiped your ID, you are late, and will receive a printed late slip from Scholarchip. (This is the same procedure as has been done in the past, only the passes come from the computer and not the office staff.)

We will begin to meet with students who have been late seven (7) or more times to review attendance. Students who are habitually late will begin to receive consequences.

The Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy will be meeting on October 17th at 2:20 in room B247.

Science tutoring will be held after school from 2:20-2:55. Please see Mrs. Wiest or Ms. Phelps with any questions.
