Your Support Saved Thousands of Lives in 2021
While it could never be too soon before we use the word “unprecedented” again, our team celebrated another challenging but amazing year of lifesaving work thanks to your support!

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Rehomed 3,869 animals, including reuniting 496 lost pets with their loving owners.
  • Rescued 1,103 at-risk pets from overcrowded and high-volume shelters around the country.
  • Welcomed our new Executive Director, Lee Harper, to the team in April 2021.
  • Spayed and neutered 5,119 pets, including 558 dogs and 2,286 cats through our low-cost spay/neuter program.
  • Supported by 189 active volunteers who donated over 14,181 total hours of their time to helping the pets and people of KHS.
  • Launched our low-cost community veterinary services pilot program in advance of breaking ground in 2022 on the Russ & Linda Young Veterinary Lifesaving Center.
  • Checked in 205 stray and owner-surrendered pets out in the community thanks to our small but mighty crew of Animal Control Officers, including 64 animals who were brought in by our officers while assisting emergency and law enforcement services.
  • Provided compassionate foster homes to 1,094 pets.
  • Uplifted by 2,385 individual supporters who together gave more than $883,000 to support our lifesaving work - not including the countless donations of wishlist items and shelter supplies and vehicle donations as well as generous sponsorships and grants.

On behalf of the thousands of pets and people we've helped because of animal-loving supporters and advocates like you, thank you.
Lotus Got Her Christmas Wish!
For 270 days, Lotus waited to meet her forever family. She came to us as a stray at the beginning of April 2021, and we quickly noticed that she was feeling stressed in the kennel environment. We knew the best way to help her would be to place her in a loving and dedicated foster home while she awaited adoption so that she could be her best self.

As the days ticked by, Lotus settled in with her foster family, doing zoomies in the yard, learning new tricks, and being the best work-from-home buddy. But the holiday season quickly approached, and Lotus was ready to have her home for the holidays.

We are so happy to say that after her 270 day stay with KHS, Lotus has been adopted, is settling into her new home wonderfully, and even had her very own presents under her family's Christmas tree!

Her adopter shared, "We saw Lotus's posts on Instagram (I've been a longtime follower of KHS, as my family has adopted two dogs over the years — both pit bulls — from KHS). What drew us to her was her story, especially it being told through TikTok. Her wanting a home for Christmas and knowing we've been looking to bring a dog into our home and grow our family felt like perfect timing. She looked like a happy dog that just needed a chance in a caring home for her. When we met her at KHS, she was so sweet, gentle, adorable, and clearly very smart. We just knew she'd be easy to love, and she is! She is our constant companion, almost like a shadow, plus a major couch potato and cuddle bug."

Thank you to everyone who played a part in helping make her Christmas wish come true. From her foster family to our dedicated staff, to those of you that shared her posts, it's made all the difference for her!

Adorable Adoptable
Meet Kit Kat!
Kit Kat has been in our care since April 2021. When he arrived, we discovered that Kit Kat has diabetes. We quickly got him on a daily regimen that worked best for him, and he’s been doing great ever since! Kit Kat loves being pet behind his ears and under his chin. He will even drool to show you how happy he is. He also loves napping in comfy cat beds and on warm blankets. Kit Kat is ten years old, so he is looking for a relaxing and loving retirement home where he can enjoy the best things in life.

While caring for a cat with diabetes may seem like a lot of work at first, it is really quite simple once you get into the swing of things. Just like any cat, Kit Kat will need regular vet check-ups. But, he also requires insulin shots twice a day which he gets with his breakfast and dinner. Kit Kat enjoys half a can of Friskies canned food morning and night when he gets his shots, which helps balance out his blood sugar levels and keeps him happy while receiving the injection. Kit Kat is a total rockstar when receiving his insulin!
And we've got excellent news! Thanks to our friends at Petfinder.com and a local donor/volunteer, Kit Kat's adopters will receive a year and a half of free insulin!
Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Eva Crim!
In the past two years, Eva Crim has clocked in almost 400 hours of volunteer service through various roles in the shelter. In fact, if you have visited KHS recently, you may have had the pleasure of meeting her! She spends many mornings at the shelter cleaning cat kennels, helping our Animal Care team whenever they need an extra hand. She also regularly helps with our Queue Concierge, greeting and checking in adopters when they arrive. You will see her working with our cats in the afternoon to ensure they all get one-on-one time daily.

KHS first met Eva in 2002, when she started as a volunteer and fell in love with a 120-pound canine that ended up being her family’s first dog! Eva had to take a step away from KHS in 2003, “work and family obligations kept me from continuing on as a volunteer, but I promised myself I’d return,” she said. And that she did, upon her return, she became a familiar and friendly face to everyone she met at the shelter. While away, the shelter had many changes, of which Eva remarked, “the transformation at KHS during those 16 years is impressive; the organization came a long way.”
When asked why Eva volunteers, she said “to pay tribute to all the rescue dogs and cats that have been part of my life for over 30 years. The love, joy, and laughter they brought and continue to bring to my life is immeasurable. Therefore, all rescue animals deserve to receive as much love and care as they give and I see this in action at KHS.”

Eva’s love for animals and willingness to always go above and beyond for the shelter is integral to what we do. We are so lucky to have her here!

Meet Micah Friend!
Micah joined our team three and a half years ago after adopting her first dog, Nola, from KHS. Now, she's our Transfer Coordinator! Let's take a look at how she got here:

"Nola had been at KHS for three weeks and was fearful of men and had some behavior issues," said Micah. "When I met Nola, I immediately fell in love! She was a smiley goofball who wanted to be as close to you as she possibly could. Adopting Nola is the reason I wanted to work for KHS. I wanted to help others meet their best friends like I had met mine."

Not long after, Micah started at KHS as a part-time Adoption Matchmaker, where she began to fulfill her goal of helping to create families. About a year later, Micah was promoted to Lifesaving Assistant. She helped different departments at the shelter, including adoptions, veterinary services, animal care, foster care, and more - but mainly worked with our transfer team. Micah served in that role for about two years and was recently promoted to Transfer Coordinator. She helps transport pets from overcrowded shelters around the country through our Rescue Me transfer program! This program not only brings at-risk pets to our community to find their fur-ever homes, but it also creates more space at the shelters they came from so that more animals can be rescued!

"Micah is such a strong asset to our shelter team!" said her manager. "She has a great work ethic and is always quick to lend a hand when others need support. She has a fantastic sense of humor that makes stressful situations easier to bear; she's just one of those people that everyone seems to enjoy working with. Her enthusiasm for helping pets in need is endless."
"While working in adoptions, she matched over 1,700 pets with loving families. I’m excited to watch her grow in her new role as Transfer Coordinator, and to see how many homeless pets she will help give a second chance at a happy life!”

“Our community has such a love for animals and we couldn’t do what we do without them,” said Micah. “Every person who comes in to adopt helps us to save lives and transfer pets from shelters that have a difficult time finding pets a home. Recently, we had a litter of kittens transferred in from one of our partners and 7 of these kitties were adopted in 2 days! Our community contributes so much to this life-saving work and I am so grateful.”

Micah is a testament to just how far you can grow on Team KHS! We’re so glad to be a part of your journey, Micah. Thanks for all you do!
