Medicare Open Enrollment: Annual Review of Your Current Plan

Did you know that, from October 15 to December 7 each year, seniors with Medicare, or their caregivers, can change their health insurance plans to better match their healthcare needs? Even if you are satisfied with your coverage, it never hurts to look at other plans that may cost you less.

What to Look at First:

• Whether you have Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage—

don’t assume your plan has not changed. Don’t be caught by surprise.

• Review the Annual Notice of Change, as well as Medicare & You,

both mailed in September, to see if there will be any cost increases in the coming year—premiums, deductibles, or copays.

• Prescription drugs – will they continue to be covered? At a higher cost?

• Your doctors – will they still accept your Medicare?

• Has the status of your health changed since last year that may require a new specialist or additional services, and possibly higher expenses?

Let a SHINE Counselor assist you with these and other questions.

To talk to a SHINE Medicare Counselor, call the

Elder Helpline 800-963-5337 www.floridashine.org

SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) provides free, unbiased health insurance counseling through a network of volunteers, empowering Florida seniors to make informed health choices. Cost savings could be yours too through the Medicare Savings Programs and the Extra Help Program.

Supporting Senior Programs

Do You Need to Take a Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA?

As you plan your IRA required minimum distributions, you may find that you do not need all of the money the government is requiring you to take. Consider using some of it for a charitable donation with an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).

A QCD refers to a way for individuals aged 70½ or older to donate (up to $108,000 for 2025) directly from their Traditional or Roth IRA to a 501(c)(3) organization, such as the Tallahassee Senior Citizens FoundationMaking a QCD counts toward your required minimum distribution for the year and is nontaxable. It’s a win-win for you and the Senior Center!

Talk with your IRA administrator to get started.
