Customer Satisfaction Survey: How Are We Doing?
We want to make sure that we are meeting your needs as we gradually reintroduce Library services. Please complete a short survey online, or pick up a paper copy at the Library or Bookmobile to let us know how we can improve, and what you would like to see reintroduced as funding and health measures permit. Your feedback is a gift to us!
Book Flight Book Club: The Library's monthly book club meets online to discuss New York Times
bestseller The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner on Tuesday, January 11 at 4:00 pm. Pre-register now. Described as "intricately plotted, atmospheric historical fiction" by Novelist, our book recommendation database, Penner's novel alternates between the tale of 18th-century London apothecary Nella who secretly sells poisons, and 21st-century American tourist Caroline who turns amateur sleuth when she discovers an antique apothecary bottle in the Thames.
All Things Relative: HeritageQuest, etc.
Librarian Kathy Nielsen returns with her monthly genealogy series on Thursday, January 13 at 4:00 pm. Attend the Zoom program by pre-registering here.
The focus this month is online genealogy resources available through your local library and beyond. Now that remote access to Ancestry is no longer available for free through libraries, what are the alternatives? Nielsen will unpack the rich offerings in HeritageQuest - free to access from home with your MPL card - and other valuable resources.
Kathy is the co-founder of the Monterey County Genealogy Society writing group "Off the Charts." She is a popular speaker and incorporates her skills as a historian, storyteller, and librarian in her search for her family’s history.
Friends & Foundation Author Talk
Join award-winning syndicated columnist Sharon Randall on Saturday, January 22 at 1:00 pm on the upstairs Terrace at the Library for a book signing and discussion of her novel, The World and Then Some. A superb storyteller, many of us remember when Randall's poignant weekly column ran in the Monterey Herald. Copies of her novel will be on hand to purchase. "Author Talks" are open to all. There is no fee for MPL Friends & Foundation members, and there is a $10 suggested donation for all others. Upcoming speakers in the series include Tony Drago and Peter Hiller.
Inspiration from the Doctor
"I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear."
The American civil rights leader was born on January 15, 1929, and assassinated on April 4, 1968. In that brief, bold life, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. graduated from a segregated high school at age 15, earned a doctorate in theology from Boston University, led his church in Montgomery, Alabama, led the march on Washington for Jobs & Freedom, started a family, and was the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize in his day. King called out racist policies and generated momentous strides for equality throughout the country. Borrow library materials to learn more. Let us be inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King's leadership and compassion on his day of remembrance, Monday, January 17.
