A Message from MSPE President Anthony Morreale, PE
No one could have predicted the turbulence of 2020 and the changes and adjustments we would all face. It forced us all to reexamine our operations to determine what should be done differently.
On the national level, NSPE united and responded with practical solutions. Meetings became virtual, remote proctoring was implemented, and the PE Institute calendar was expanded to include more webinars.
On the local level, we launched our updated MSPE website to better represent our state Society and promote the many practical resources that MSPE and NSPE offers.
We also launched an initiative to help connect members with project opportunities. All licensed members are encouraged to take advantage of this benefit by emailing a brief summary of their capabilities and services, as outlined in this document, to president@mspe.com. When MSPE receives referral-inquiries seeking specific expertise, we will provide the contact details of members who may represent a good fit, and are interested in being referred. View the document for more details, including our disclaimer.
MSPE Director Kenneth R. Skinger, PE, Esq., F.NSPE is leading a committee to explore partnership with other organizations to present webinars that explore business-related and legal issues related to the practice of engineering.
I am grateful for the dedication of our Board and committee volunteers in these uncertain times. Whether you are a long-time member or new to MSPE, we appreciate your participation as we navigate forward. Future issues of MSPE Briefings will share highlights and results of our members’ enthusiasm, dedication, and passion.
Speaking of the Board, we are seeking nominations for Officer and Director positions for terms starting in June. Now is the time to consider a role that showcases your talents and enhances your standing among peers. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.
In this issue of MSPE Briefings, we share recent initiatives of our national and local Society; provide timely updates about how MATHCOUNTS has pivoted to support our states Mathletes; and welcome new members. We also pause to thank outgoing Board member Tom Vaughan, PE for his service, and remember our great colleague, Tom Hulbert, PE, F.NSPE, who passed away in October.
On behalf of the Board, I thank you for your continued support in making our world a place where, in the words of our Society’s Vision statement, “the public can be confident that engineering decisions affecting their lives are made by qualified and ethically accountable professionals.”

MA MATHCOUNTS Updates & Opportunities
Although this year’s MATHCOUNTS program has pivoted to online practices and competitions, it is no less challenging or exciting for the 750 students participating in 7 chapters across MA!
Seven chapter competitions were held on Feb 5-6, during a 24-hr window of student-access to the contests. The chapter winners will advance to the Chapter Invitational on February 25, to vie for just 45 coveted opportunities to compete in the Massachusetts State Competition online on March 25. (State-level competitors include the top 5 from each chapter, plus the top 10 overall Mathletes.)
The highest-scoring four Mathletes will form our State Team, and compete at the MATHCOUNTS National Competition on May 11. The current plan is a live, in-person event in Washington, DC. National MATHCOUNTS leaders will convene in late February to determine if it will be live or virtual.
If the competition is in person, MSPE Board member John Hayden, PE, State Director of MATHCOUNTS, will accompany the students along with whomever earns the title of 2021 State Coach.
MATHCOUNTS programs are featured on Pg. 23 of the Winter Issue of PE Magazine!

DID YOU KNOW....
MATHCOUNTS is much more than a competition series.
The National Math Club is a program for students who LOVE math, and students who FEAR math.
Those who love math gain valuable challenges, and those who fear math gain valuable coping strategies that enhance their confidence and enable them to go beyond their current level. Grade 6-8 students gain the opportunity to play fun math games in a non-competitive, social environment.
Easy Ways That YOU or Your FIRM Can Support MATHCOUNTS
Here's how YOU or your FIRM can support this vital program and encourage students to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics:
ASK your local Middle School(s) if they are aware of MATHCOUNTS programs/
SHARE the LINK to MATHCOUNTS.org & encourage them to request FREE materials
APPROACH your service providers – such as insurance companies, banks, financial advisors, professional societies, telecommunications firms, online vendors and supermarket chains – to ask if their charitable foundations will support MATHCOUNTS. Assure them that 100% of their tax-deductible contribution will directly benefit Massachusetts MATHCOUNTS.
Engineers Week is FEB 22-26
You Can Participate and Solve Engineering Problems
MATHCOUNTS has partnered with BAE Systems to develop an engineering-themed “Problems of the Day” contest for each week day of Engineers Week (February 22-26). Morreale Presents to Engineering Students
In December 2020, Anthony Morreale, PE led a webinar presentation titled, The Importance of Becoming a Licensed Professional Engineer for engineering students at Berkshire Community College.
More than a dozen students learned about the fundamentals of being a PE, the benefits of earning PE licensure, the process of getting licensed, and NSPE/MSPE’s role in the industry. Many participants were already student members of the Society, and all students are encouraged to join. Professor and Engineering Chair José R. Colmenares, Ph.D is working with MSPE to start an NSPE Student Chapter at BCC.

Remembering Thomas E. Hulbert, PE
MSPE fondly remembers our friend and colleague, Tom Hulbert, PE, who passed away in October 2020.
Tom was a Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University in Boston, and a retired Associate Dean of Engineering and Director of the School of Engineering Technology. He served on the MSPE Board for several years, and on NSPE’s Professional Engineers in Higher Education Interest Group, after serving as MSPE Secretary. Tom was on the Program Committee when Massachusetts hosted the NSPE National Convention in 2006, and for several years he coordinated and taught MSPE’s FE Exam Course Preparation program.
In 2018, MSPE celebrated Tom’s well-deserved national recognition as an NSPE Fellow, an honor and accomplishment he was proud to have earned. Tom’s warm and encouraging personality enriched the lives of his many students, colleagues, and fellow MSPE members. We are grateful for his contributions to the engineering profession and our Society. View the obituary of Thomas E. Hulbert, PE 1935-2020.

Follow the Engineering Change Lab USA
Many NSPE members are playing a role in a new organization that serves as a “social change lab” for engineering, called Engineering Change Lab USA.
Engineering Change Lab USA (ECL) was founded in 2017 as a venue for forward-thinking leaders to address licensure, ethics, entrepreneurship, and public policy in a setting that might not occur during a typical professional society or engineering organization forum. On December 16, 2020 NSPE and NCEES partnered with ECL on the virtual summit Licensure Models for the 4th Industrial Revolution. The next summit on March 22, 2021, is titled, T he Imperative of Climate Change & the Future of Engineering. Read more about ECL & NSPE in this PE magazine article.
