A Message from NSPE President David P. Martini, P.E., F.NSPE

As responsible professionals, the members of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the community of technicians certified under NSPE's NICET programs understand the importance of holding paramount the public health, safety, and welfare. NSPE continues to monitor international, national, state, and local developments arising as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak and is taking all appropriate steps consistent with the guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to protect its employees, members, and other customers while maintaining the maximum level of operations in the performance of its services.
We want to make you aware of the actions we have taken and the issues we considered in doing so.

UPDATE: Now Cancelled for April 14:
Tour
of the Braintree Electric Light Department (BELD)
Power Plant: Thomas A. Watson Generating Station
|
|
With concern for everyone's health and safety amid the Coronavirus pandemic, MSPE has cancelled our tour of the Braintree Electric Light Department’s power plant, the
Watson Generating Station, originally scheduled for April 14. We hope to reschedule the tour for a future date, and are notifying current registrants of this update.

John Hayden, PE, Senior Transportation Engineer, and his team at
Stantec for earning an ACEC/MA Silver Award for their design of the
Woods Memorial Bridge project.
The project was featured in the November 2019 issue of
Roads and Bridges Magazine as one of the
Top 10 bridge construction projects of 2019.

Brandon C. Steacy, PE

Brandon C. Steacy, PE
is an MSPE Director, currently serving as President Elect until June 2021 when he will become our Society’s 68th president.
As a Senior Engineer with LIG Consultants, Mr. Steacy works on many aspects of electrical engineering, including but not limited to electrical system studies, photovoltaic ground mounted interconnections, substation design, and control and protection.

Q:
Why did you join MSPE?
A:
I joined MSPE because I want to try to strengthen the professional engineering license and create awareness to young engineers that getting their license is an important career decision.
Q: What are your goals as an engineer?
A:
My goals as an engineer are to continue gaining knowledge in my field of engineering and to always stay open to learning from others. As I progress in my career, I would like to mentor young engineers and encourage the continuing education of my peers.
Q: Please describe a project that you’re involved with.

MA MATHCOUNTS Updates Opportunities
|
|
After seven exciting chapter competitions throughout the state, the MATHCOUNTS State Competition, held on March 7 at Wentworth University, has determined the four students who will represent Massachusetts at the National level.
These 2020 Massachusetts State Champion Middle School Mathletes will advance to compete at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition on May 9-12 in Orlando:

– to ask if their charitable foundations will support MATHCOUNTS. Assure them that 100% of their tax-deductible contribution will directly benefit Massachusetts MATHCOUNTS, and

Take the Milton F. Lunch Ethics Contest Challenge!

How should ethics factor into the development of artificial intelligence, or in guiding the future of the profession?
|
|
You’re invited to match your wits and knowledge of engineering ethics with experienced PEs and engineering students throughout the country, in the 2020 NSPE Milton F. Lunch Ethics Contest. All current NSPE individual members through their NSPE state societies are encouraged to participate.
NSPE will provide the 2020 winning entry author with a
cash award of $2,000, a certificate, and recognition in PE magazine.
This year, NSPE’s Board of Ethical Review is furnishing
three key ethical issues
plus
one open-ended issue
for you to
select one
, and submit a video, photo essay, poster, or an essay or PowerPoint presentation not to exceed 1,000 words that expresses your views and demonstrates an understanding of the ethical issues involved.

Event Recap: Tour of Symmons Industries Facility
|
|
On December 5, 2019, nearly 20 MSPE members and guests participated in a facility tour of Symmons Industries in Braintree, MA. Prior to the tour, facility leaders presented an overview of the firm's innovative engineering and manufacturing process. Immediately following the tour, participants socialized and networked at a local restaurant.
