Welcome to the June 2025 UBBA Newsletter

The Board of Directors & Members of the Alliance are happy to share the following strategic information. We welcome all utilities & solution providers to consider membership.

A Word From The Board

Dear Valued Members and Supporters,

As a founding member of the Utility Broadband Alliance (UBBA), and in my roles as Board Member and Treasurer, I’m proud to celebrate the powerful momentum we’ve built together—especially as we have taken important advocacy strides at the FCC this month. This advocacy reflects our shared belief: that robust, secure broadband is essential to modernizing utility operations and enabling the reliability and resilience of our nation’s energy systems.

UBBA’s leadership in uniting voices across the utility ecosystem and amplifying our collective impact at the federal level is truly commendable. Together, we’re driving meaningful change - turning connectivity into critical infrastructure.

I’m especially looking forward to the 2025 UBBA Summit & Plugfest, hosted by Duke Energy in Charlotte from November 4–6. This will be a dynamic opportunity to see private LTE in action, explore groundbreaking use cases - from mutual aid coordination to IoT-enabled grid innovation -and engage in deep peer learning. I’m also particularly excited for the first Women of UBBA breakfast workshop, which aims at championing leadership and diversity in our industry.

To our newest members: welcome! Your expertise and energy will only strengthen our mission. Thank you for joining this transformative journey. Let’s keep pushing boundaries, sharing insights, and shaping the future of utility broadband together.

Sincerely,

Mar Tarres,

VP of Commercial Operations, Anterix

UBBA Filings to the FCC in June Advocate in Support of Utility Spectrum Bands

On June 16, 2025, UBBA filed reply comments in support of the Review of the Commission’s Rules Governing the 896-901/935-940 MHz Band (WT Docket No. 24-99, RM-11977). The initial comments filed in response to the NPRM express overwhelming support for enabling increased broadband deployment on all ten megahertz of the 896-901/935-940 MHz band (“900 MHz band”) and clearly demonstrate that establishing a framework for the deployment of 5/5 megahertz broadband operations in the 900 MHz band is in the public interest.

Further, on June 20, 2025, UBBA filed comments regarding Wireless Telecommunications Bureau Accepts for Filing T-Mobile USA, Inc.’s and Grain Management, LLC’s Assignment Applications and Seeks Comment on Waiver Requests (WT Docket No. 25-178). With the mission of promoting the advancement and development of private broadband networks as a key enabler of the utility of the future, UBBA supports efforts to improve the operations and security of our nation’s evolving electric grid through facilitating the deployment of private LTE (“pLTE”) and 5G networks enabled by broadband spectrum. UBBA accordingly supports the proposed transactions to the extent that they will, as Applicants state, provide utilities with access to much-needed licensed broadband spectrum to support their expanding communications needs.
