Sunday Service

Sunday, February 11, 2024

10:00am ONSITE and on Zoom and Facebook Live

“Banned Books Sunday”

with Tim Ream and Corinda Humphrey

Across the country, and right here at home in California, ongoing attempts to ban books threaten free speech and restrict access to information. Banned books have become symbolic in the conservative culture wars, targeting LGBTQ inclusion and critical race theory. We’ll hear two of our congregation’s librarians report from their perspectives and share an ethical grounding in our faith and values. We will also lift up the Lunar New Year which starts its celebration this Sunday.

Your monetary gifts sustain our beloved community and enable us to further embody our values through our gatherings, programs, and community outreach. Please consider UUCLB in your charitable gifts for 2023-2024.

Children and Youth meet in the Chalice Building for

“Faith in Action Sunday”

Help Long Beach COA meet their goal of 1000 personal care kits to show our love for our unhoused neighbors.

Please bring donations of new multipack toothbrushes, tampons/pads, travel size tooth paste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, soap, razors, combs, brushes, etc., to help complete the kits.

Help Our Kids Help Unhoused Teens

Youth Faith in Action

You can help out a unhoused teen by donating hygiene items prior to Service on February 11. We are looking for new toothbrushes, bars of soap, toothpaste, shaving razors, deodorant, and combs. Drop them by the Chalice Building before Service February 11 (or at the Church office prior to that).

Children and Youth will assemble the materials into hygiene kits for unhoused teens during their classroom time together. Last year we made about 100 kits. This is part of the Religious Education program’s “Faith In Action” series of monthly activities benefiting others.

Article II: What are We Talking About?

Although the bylaws of the UU Association of congregations cover many aspects of our Faith, the conversation now is mostly about the Principles we have and the new Values which are proposed to replace them with a vote at the General Assembly of the Association in June. New to this? The 8th Principle Scholarship Application Deadline is 2/18/2024 Sunday

The 8th Principle Scholarship Application period to apply for a UUCLB scholarship to UU Association General Assembly June 20-23 (Th-Su)  - has been extended to

We urge members that identify with the purpose of the scholarship to apply for these scholarships.

Apply for UUA scholarship also at https://www.uua.org/ga/registration Financial Support Options.

The Cost is 280$ for early bird. (Cost rises March 15)

The 2024 UUA General Assembly June 20-23 (Th-Su) will be streaming live (on-line). Enjoy from home or in comradery with UU friends. This Scholarship is to promote folks attendance who might not be able to go due to cultural systematic, generational marginalization.

UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH OF LONG BEACH - POLICY FOR 8th PRINCIPLE SCHOLARSHIPS TO DISTRICT, REGIONAL, AND GENERAL ASSEMBLIES (Excerpt)

In keeping with the 8th Principle and Widening the Circle of Concern, 8th Principle Scholarships will be awarded to members of our congregation whose social location often marginalizes and silences their voices. People in this group are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color), LGBTQ+, young adults, youth, disabled people, and those whose socioeconomic status places them in the margins.

The selection process will prioritize current and emerging leaders and those members who have demonstrated a deep commitment to serving their church. A scholarship recipient who wishes to be a delegate should be strongly considered for that appointment.

Cost barriers to participation include registration, … lost wages, .. factors that may require support. Thus, the amount of financial support needed will vary among the applicants and from one event to another. It should also be noted that most Assembly events offer additional opportunities for defraying costs, especially through volunteering and through scholarships.

Scholarship recipients are invited to share their experiences by:

  1. Organizing or participating in workshops; or
  2. Writing articles for the Advance; or
  3. Participating in a worship service; or
  4. Contributing learnings to the congregation in another meaningful way.

An ad hoc task force (has formed, and officially established – see 2/6/2024 UUCLB board minutes at members only google drive) to administer the Scholarships. Contact Kathy Adams Chair of the 8th Principle Scholarship Team if you have questions or need assistance in applying at katole@uuclb.org or cell 562-619-8612.

The 8th principle: “We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” https://www.8thprincipleuu.org/

Postcarding News: Notes from Markers for Democracy

Over 35,000 postcards, ours among them, have gone out for the three Orange County Board of Education seats up for election. The OC communities we wrote for are up against a MomsForLiberty/WhiteChristianNationalist agenda, book bans, whitewashed curricula, and the targeting of LGBTQ+ students with forced outing. The three school board areas are located in key Congressional districts, and down-ballot races like these can increase up-ballot turnout by as much as 2.5%!

Statement of Purpose

Awaken people to their power in social justice activism and advocacy

LA Voice “Listening Campaign” & “Home is Sacred” Narrative has resulted in SB567 being Signed into Law in 2023 – Thank you for supporting this effort:

  • Listening to our Congregants
  • Postcards & Letters
  • Rally at the Capital in Sacramento
  • Meetings with our State Representatives & Senators, Long Beach Mayor
  • News Conferences with the Press

When we started this journey together back in 2022, we knew the fight to get SB567, the Homelessness Prevention Act, through the legislative cycle and signed into law would be an uphill battle.

Through the Senate and the Assembly, through the ups and downs, we hung on, grounded by our faith, and our conviction to build an LA county, and a California with equity and abundance for all.

February 2024

Dream Success Center

California State University Long Beach

Our UUCLB February special collection will go to the Dream Success Center at California State University Long Beach, our community partner for what we traditionally called the UUCLB “Dreamer Scholarship Program.” Diane Kert, long-time coordinator of this program led us through the transition that has us now working with the Dream Success Center at CSULB. Many of us make our donations to this special collection to honor her memory.

Last year our generous donations allowed the Dream Success Center to award two $2500 scholarships from the Norma Stoltz Chinchilla Scholarship Fund which the Dream Success Center now administers. The rest of our donation to the Dream Success Center was used to provide direct services to undocumented students (paid internships, emergency supplies, academic, legal and psychological support). To learn more about the programs we are supporting check out this Dream Success Center impact report.https://d.docs.live. net/5129a95d07f3aa47/Desktop/Dream%20Succcess%20 Center/AY22-23_DSC%20Program%20IMPACT%20 REPORT(2).pdf

Some background information: Undocumented students at CSULB and other local colleges are a racially and ethnically diverse group of young people who were brought here from other countries by their parents as children. They attended and graduated from U.S. high schools but have no path to citizenship under our current harsh immigration policies. Undocumented college students in the U.S. are a diverse group: 45.7% are Hispanic, 27.2% are AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander), 13.8% are Black, and 10% are white, and 3.4% fall under other categories.

Over 80% of the undocumented students at CSULB are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. Their struggle to complete their degrees in a reasonable amount of time became more difficult over the last two years when anti-imigrant group legal challenges to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program prevented it from accepting new applicants. This means that more and more undocumented students seeking higher degrees or technical training do not have valid work permits, temporary protection from deportation or any of the other benefits that DACA status would have given them. This makes the services the Dream Success Center offers and the encouragement that they give students more important than ever.

Representatives from the Dream Success Center will attend our worship service on February 11, 2024 and stay after service to answer questions and give updates on achievements and challenges of immigrant students pursuing degrees that will allow them to contribute to the future of this country.

In recognition of our generosity as a community partner, the CSULB Dream Success Center has invited us to lunch on the campus and a tour of the Center. If you have a special interest in learning more about this invitation or other other questions or need more information contact Norma Chinchilla at norma.amazonica@gmail.com.

You can support the monthly special collection by donating until the last Sunday of the month and marking your check with “February Special Collection”. Mail your check to: UUCLB,5450 E. Atherton Street, Long Beach, CA 90808. You can also give to the February Special Collection anytime in the month using Text-to-Give.

To give $25.00, for example, text “25 Special Collection” (or other amount) to 833-931-1845. Gifts sent with no designation go to the regular Offering, Pro Tip: to cover any convenience fees for the church, you can text: “25 Special Collection cover" or simply text: “Cover fees on” to cover fees on ALL text gifts.)
