Our seventh Unitarian Universalist Principle is perhaps one of our most beloved, “respect for the interdependent web of all existence.” As Article II revisions continue, we reflect on our call to connectedness with all life. We explore the foils of individualism and isolation, deepening our understandings of how the forces of capitalism, white supremacy and domination threaten the web, and how each of us can strengthen our personal bonds of interconnectedness.

When we acknowledge our sacred connection to the Earth, we understand that everything good and bad that is done to the planet is also done to us. This realization inspires and encourages us towards meaningful action. Join us as we reflect on both the joys and sorrows that we carry and ways that we can work together to protect our interconnected web.

Youth Faith In Action Sunday
Celebrate Earth Day Hanging With Our Peeps…
Little Chicks To Cuddle!
On Sunday, April 21, children and youth will put their faith into action with one of a series of monthly activities benefiting others. The Faith In Action Sunday will involve working in our garden with Ground Education, a local garden education group which is the church's community donation recipient for this month. We will make strawberry jam, plant seeds, and learn about how chickens help a garden. There will be live chicks to cuddle!

Freedom’s Interdependence with Rev. Lissa and Worship Associate Karen Mourikas
This year the Jewish festival of Passover, with its themes of freedom and liberation, is celebrated in the shadow of devastating months of painful violence which has deeply divided our interfaith and Unitarian Universalist community. We explore Passover’s themes of freedom with storytelling, song and reflections seeking to build bridges of interfaith solidarity and Unitarian Universalist moral clarity to call for a lasting and permanent ceasefire.

UUCLB Poetry Evening
Come one, come all! Invite your friends! UUCLB is having a Poetry Evening on April 28 at 4:00pm. Featured poets will be our own Mauricio Moreno and Nancy Woo. We will also be inviting three other poets from outside our community AND there will be also an open mic. This poetry event is in coordination with National Poetry Month. It is sponsored by the UUCLB Bipoc Fellowship and supported by our Music and Arts Committee. NOTE: This is an all church event. The Bipoc sponsorship is simply because the idea flowed from our Bipoc Affinity Group.
The open mic will be strictly monitored to control appropriateness of material, including length of time. Sign ups for the open mic will be limited to those who sign up on the day of the event (or prior). Best way is to reach out to us through Bipoc.chair@uuclb.org.
This is a poet’s event. We encourage people to recite their original work.

Seeking General Assembly Delegates!
Application to become a delegate for UUCLB
We invite you to be one of the thousands of UUs who will participate in this year’s General Assembly (GA) – the annual meeting of our Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). Participants worship, witness, learn, connect, and make policy for the Association through the democratic process.
In a world filled with division and challenges, the theme for this year is a powerful reminder of the core principles that unite us as Unitarian Universalists. "Love Unites, Stories Ignite" celebrates the profound impact of love as a binding force that transcends boundaries and fosters connections within our faith community and beyond.
The major business this year will be voting on proposed changes to Article II of the UUA bylaws which describe the core religious values of Unitarian Universalism. This would change our current six Principles to a set of Values that include covenants of action. In addition to the final proposed revisions by the Article II Study Commission, many congregations have submitted their own proposed amendments, including UUCLB. Our amendment would add “Reason” as one of the Values.
UUCLB is entitled to five delegates this year – if you’re interested in serving as a UUCLB delegate at GA, please complete this short application
Your Board of Trustees will select a group of delegates to collectively represent the congregation in all its various diversities, including youth and young adults. Priority will be given to qualified members who did not attend the previous year's or any other assembly as delegates, and who will bring back ideas, issues, and enthusiasm to the congregation.
Registration is open and scholarships are still available if you would like assistance with the registration fee. (Scholarship Applicaton)

Extra Parking for CHURCH SERVICES (Sundays only)
Our East and West Parking lots are now at capacity. That is good news; people are finding us! For overflow parking on Sundays, extra parking is available in the Los Altos Medical center Lot at 1777 N Bellflower Blvd. We urge anyone who can to come a little early to park in the Los Altos Medical Center Lot. This will make us more welcoming to newcomers who can find space in our more accessible lots. Directions to the overflow parking lot:
- From the West on Atherton pass the church lots and turn right into the alley after the apartments.
- From the North on Bellflower take a right into the Medical Center entrance just after the Arco Station.
- From the South on Bellflower, a long left turn lane makes for an easy left turn into Los Altos Medical Center Parking.

UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH OF LONG BEACH - POLICY FOR 8th PRINCIPLE SCHOLARSHIPS TO DISTRICT, REGIONAL, AND GENERAL ASSEMBLIES (Excerpt)
In keeping with the 8th Principle and Widening the Circle of Concern, 8TH Principle Scholarships will be awarded to members of our congregation whose social location often marginalizes and silences their voices. People in this group are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color), LGBTQ+, young adults, youth, disabled people, and those whose socioeconomic status places them in the margins.
The selection process will prioritize current and emerging leaders and those members who have demonstrated a deep commitment to serving their church. A scholarship recipient who wishes to be a delegate should be strongly considered for that appointment.
Cost barriers to participation include registration, … lost wages, .. factors that may require support. Thus, the amount of financial support needed will vary among the applicants and from one event to another. It should also be noted that most Assembly events offer additional opportunities for defraying costs, especially through volunteering and through scholarships.
Scholarship recipients are invited to share their experiences by:
1. Organizing or participating in workshops; or
2. Writing articles for the Advance; or
3. Participating in a worship service; or
4. Contributing learnings to the congregation in another meaningful way.

Registration for in person attendance closes on Friday, April 12, 2024. The business and programs of the Pacific Western Regional Assembly will conclude on Saturday afternoon. Earth Day worship at local Denver and Boulder congregations is being planned for Sunday, to welcome those who want an entire UU weekend of connection.
People can attend either in person, at First Universalist in Denver, or remotely. We are planning a family friendly event and children are welcome. This is a great chance to connect with our larger faith and connect with new and old friends. REGISTER TODAY!

Social Justice Collection | |

Support for Harbor Area Women’s Lives (SHAWL) is a four-month residential recovery program for homeless, addicted women who are survivors of domestic violence (currently 13 women). SHAWL provides comprehensive services and treatment in a warm and supportive atmosphere for women who are attempting to end their addiction, live a life free from violence, and become self sufficient. SHAWL gives the women an opportunity to improve their life and educational skills, time to explore destructive behavior patterns and learn new decision making skills in order to work toward stability as well as independence in their lives.
Three facilities in San Pedro provide temporary housing and supportive services for women. SHAWL’s Executive Director is UUCLB member Laurie Whalen-Martinez. Visit the SHAWL website: www.shawlwomenshouse.org
Our social justice collection takes place on the second Sunday, but you can support Long Beach Community Table until the last Sunday of July and DAYS Long Beach until the last Sunday of August, by mail, text, or online.
