Children and Youth will put their faith into action by making toys for a local animal shelter Sunday, March 10, as part of a series of monthly activities benefiting others. We are also collecting gently used towels and blankets for the shelter. Donations of unopened cat and dog food are welcome too!

Thank you for joining us on Stewardship Sunday to welcome our new director of Music Ministries, Gavin Thrasher, and to learn more about our hopes and encouragement for a successful pledge year from Rev. Lissa and our Board of Directors. Thank you to those attending the after-service discussion for sharing your hopes and dreams for the future of UUCLB.
To all members and friends who find our values, programs, community outreach and your participation in UUCLB an important part of your life, we ask you to make a financial contribution that you can afford to what we do and will do in the year ahead. If you made a pledge last year and are able, we invite and welcome a 10% increase in what you can give for July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025. What we are able to do is funded with 60% of our income from pledges and our fundraising goal is $366,000.

Extra Parking for CHURCH SERVICES (Sunday only)
Our East and West Parking lots are now at capacity. That is good news; people are finding us! For overflow parking on Sundays, extra parking is available in the Los Altos Medical center Lot at 1777 N Bellflower Blvd. We urge anyone who can to come a little early to park in the Los Altos Medical Center Lot. This will make us more welcoming to newcomers who can find space in our more accessible lots. Directions to the overflow parking lot:
- From the West on Atherton pass the church lots and turn right into the alley after the apartments.
- From the North on Bellflower take a right into the Medical Center entrance just after the Arco Station.
- From the South on Bellflower, a long left turn lane makes for an easy left turn into Los Altos Medical Center Parking.

UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH OF LONG BEACH - POLICY FOR 8th PRINCIPLE SCHOLARSHIPS TO DISTRICT, REGIONAL, AND GENERAL ASSEMBLIES (Excerpt)
In keeping with the 8th Principle and Widening the Circle of Concern, 8TH Principle Scholarships will be awarded to members of our congregation whose social location often marginalizes and silences their voices. People in this group are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color), LGBTQ+, young adults, youth, disabled people, and those whose socioeconomic status places them in the margins.
The selection process will prioritize current and emerging leaders and those members who have demonstrated a deep commitment to serving their church. A scholarship recipient who wishes to be a delegate should be strongly considered for that appointment.
Cost barriers to participation include registration, … lost wages, .. factors that may require support. Thus, the amount of financial support needed will vary among the applicants and from one event to another. It should also be noted that most Assembly events offer additional opportunities for defraying costs, especially through volunteering and through scholarships.
Scholarship recipients are invited to share their experiences by:
1. Organizing or participating in workshops; or
2. Writing articles for the Advance; or
3. Participating in a worship service; or
4. Contributing learnings to the congregation in another meaningful way.
An ad hoc task force (has formed, and officially established – see 2/6/2024 UUCLB board minutes at members only google drive) to administer the Scholarships. Registration for in person attendance closes on Friday, April 12, 2024. The business and programs of the Pacific Western Regional Assembly will conclude on Saturday afternoon. Earth Day worship at local Denver and Boulder congregations is being planned for Sunday, to welcome those who want an entire UU weekend of connection.

Social Justice Collection | |

Support for Harbor Area Women’s Lives (SHAWL) is a four-month residential recovery program for homeless, addicted women who are survivors of domestic violence (currently 13 women). SHAWL provides comprehensive services and treatment in a warm and supportive atmosphere for women who are attempting to end their addiction, live a life free from violence, and become self sufficient. SHAWL gives the women an opportunity to improve their life and educational skills, time to explore destructive behavior patterns and learn new decision making skills in order to work toward stability as well as independence in their lives.
Three facilities in San Pedro provide temporary housing and supportive services for women. SHAWL’s Executive Director is UUCLB member Laurie Whalen-Martinez. Visit the SHAWL website: www.shawlwomenshouse.org
