Membership Update

If you have been around Vespra Hills Golf Club for the past few years you will have undoubtedly noticed that we are significantly busier now than in the past. Maybe this is because of COVID-19 or maybe we are just coming into our own but either way we are averaging approximately 25% more play this year over last. If this level of play is sustained we will be capping our golfing memberships in order to continue to offer fair access to the tee for our members.

When this time arrives, members will be notified by email and any members who are currently “Holding”, followed by current “Try and Buy” members will have the first opportunity to join our Club. A waiting list will be created and the rounds generated will continue to be monitored.

Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday to Cinder who celebrated her birthday on the 18th. She enjoyed birthday cake on the patio surrounded by many friends who joyfully sang "Happy Birthday"!

The Lawn

Introducing THE LAWN! The newest spot for gathering with old friends and new to enjoy a light meal, some cold beverages and a beautiful view in a relaxed setting. THE LAWN is the first phase of re-opening our Food & Beverage services. Come relax and let us take care of you! Chef Cheryl has created a menu that includes some favourites from the barbecue as well as some quick bites. The perfect end to a great day on the golf course. These menu items are for enjoyment while at the course or to take away and enjoy at home. Most items are also available through our Mobile App for you to enjoy on course as well. We are in the process of preparing to open the patio upstairs at the Clubhouse and will convey those details as soon as they are finalized. The upstairs patio will see different menu selections and different operating hours so that we can offer our members the variety they are looking for. We are so happy to see the Club camaraderie and to watch everyone enjoy our new venue. Come and join us on THE LAWN!

Upcoming Events

The Canada Day Scramble is just around the corner and we hope to see many of you come out next Wednesday morning for a fun round at the club. We have taken the Opening Field Day format and used it for this event, considering we were not able to enjoy it this Spring. Guests are welcome to play if you wish and team composition can be mixed, have juniors, etc. Just come out in your red and white outfit and stick around for a Canada Day patio special afterwards. Click here to enter.

The Pot ‘O’ Green is our next Men’s event on July 4 th and is coming up fast. The four person teams will be made by the golf shop, consisting of an A,B,C & D player. The Format is a Net 1,2,3 where on the first hole, one score counts, on hole two, two scores count, on hole 3, 3 scores count, on hole four, back to one score counting. It makes for an exciting last hole of the day if you are in contention! Sign up by noon on June 30. Click here to register

The Ladies Member Guest on July 15 is not quite sold out but has already surpassed last year’s registration numbers which is fantastic. Find a partner and join in.

The Men’s Member Guest Invitational on July 17/18 is now sold out and a waiting list had been created.

The member events are starting to get to the point where sell outs are occurring, so be sure to sign up early for the upcoming tourneys.

It is equally important to note that good portions of the tee sheets on these days will be reserved for the events and members that are not participating may need to adjust their playing schedules and carts may become extremely limited as some of these events have mandatory carts reserved.

A Message From The Golf Shop

Summer arrived officially last weekend and it certainly was a hot one. We have had a lot of activity at the club over the last few weeks and this trend continues right on into July.

The Senior Championship is a week and a half gone past and we've kept moving like a downhill putt on Still Valley #7. Let us take a moment to recognize the great participation, excellent performances and the strong community that came together for 2 days. We had 47 players in total which was quite a bit more that 2019. Players from all skill levels participated and it looked to me that everyone enjoyed playing and testing their skills. The weekend belonged to two players, Jackie Kavanagh and Mike Bell. They both had outstanding day 2 scores that eventually earned them top honours in each division available for their respective championships. That is no small task and is a testament to their all-round game and preparation.  Click here for the leaderboard.

A very deserving congratulations to Michael Bell and Jacqueline Kavanagh as our Men's and Women's Senior Champions for 2020.

The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly was played this past Saturday and it lived up to its reputation. The Good was a nice friendly 2-person scramble played on Sand Hills and was full of smiles and happiness. The Bad was a Better Ball game on Homestead that saw some smiles but not as many as one may have hoped. The Ugly was an Alternate Shot format played on Still Valley and it was ugly. Hey, it was meant to be ugly right? We had a leaderboard that saw major swings on that last nine with the winning team of John Alpaugh and Dennis Kavanagh knowing that they had to finish with 2 birdies to win and they did just that. What an incredible finish, beating out Daniel Hepp and Steve Reavie for top spot. Click here to see the results

With the course becoming much busier, we are seeing a more diverse range of players enjoying the course. Some enjoy a pace of play that is below 3 hours for 18 holes, some enjoy a pace that is 4+ hours; both come with some issues. The quick players may become easily frustrated when they must wait and the slower players may not understand why they are being scrutinized by fellow members or the Golf Shop. We know that there is a ‘too slow’ but there can also be a ‘too fast’. The ‘too fast’ players may need to come to terms with the standard playing time of 3:45 to 4 hours for 18 holes as that is considered good pace of play within golf club culture. The ‘too slow’ need to realize that their slow pace of play can literally ruin the pace of play for the remainder of the day, especially when the club is busy. When a group is waiting on you, or you have lost your position on the course, it is imperative that you either speed up, skip a hole, or let faster groups play through. When you are playing through, it is good etiquette to play through quickly. Remember the courtesy that the slower group is extending you and blaze through that hole out of respect. Maybe that means a longer gimme than normal, or simply take a par or bogey and move on; whatever you think shows appreciation for the gesture.

Junior Days are going to begin on July 8 with a morning and afternoon session. We can take up to 12 juniors per session and it will include 1 hour of pre-round time with a Golf Shop Assistant before teeing off and playing a fun nine-hole round. The morning session begins at 9am with the first groups teeing off at 10am. The Afternoon session begins at noon with the first groups teeing off at 1pm. The Juniors will need to register each week through Golf Genius. We will provide a link via a direct email to the Junior Members.

The Junior Senior event is coming up on July 11 and should be a great time! Juniors can pair up with an adult member or guest to play a fun nine-hole scramble. We will send direct registration invites to all the juniors this week.

Titleist Custom Fit Day: July 2, 10am-3pm.

We are pleased to have Titleist come to our Club for a Custom Fit Day on July 2. Due to Covid-19 precautions, we will not be allowing walk-ups, all users must have a booked appt. There are five spots open from 10am to 2pm, each approximately 45min to 1 hour in length. Please email me directly to reserve: chris@vesprahillsgolfclub.com

Lastly, I would like to inform you all that we do have a Local Rules document in the Golf Shop that outlines the different local rules we have here at Vespra Hills Golf Club. The most significant local rule is the one that permits players to drop a ball 2 club-lengths onto the fairway for a 2 stroke penalty in a lost ball scenario, versus having to go back to the tee or where the original shot was taken. There is much more to this local rule, so please take a moment to review it. We would be happy to provide a copy for you via email or print.

Take care and see you all soon

Chris McNair

COVID-19 Procedural Updates

The Club now has dividers on the power carts that meet the government recommendation to allow shared carts. This will help the Club avoid power cart shortages. With our increased play, we may still run short on carts but this should become less of a daily occurrence. We encourage those who can walk to do so, especially on days where the weather is hot and we know that some of your fellow members truly need that vehicle more than others.

We continue to negotiate the COVID-19 world as best we can, focusing on maintaining a safe environment for members and employees alike. With this, there are many technological approaches that we have employed. One practice we had implemented was Same Day Online Bookings. The Club has since disabled this option so that we can try to maintain an accurate visitors list with our Gatekeepers. By phoning in for same day bookings, we can do a better job of ensuring that your name gets added to the gatekeeper’s list so that entry to the club is more efficient. You will still be able to view the tee sheet when you log on and can then call the Golf Shop to reserve in an open slot.

Golf Canada Handicap Tutorials

Quite a few clubs had a computer kiosk in their Pro Shop for members to enter scores and due to COVID-19 they've been removed. Members are now entering scores at home and some are having trouble. Last week we posted a video on how to enter scores from a desktop computer that you can watch here . Attached below are 2 step-by-step guides for mobile devices that I hope will help:

  1. Golf Canada Score Entry Online (using Web Browser)
  2. Golf Canada Mobile App Hole by Hole Score Entry

YamaTrack Free Yardage App

YamaTrack will give you the yardage to any spot on the golf course with the click of a button using GPS technology. Download from the Apple or Android app store to save strokes off of your game.
