THE BASS INITIATES: NEW MONUMENTS
The Bass, Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum, announces the launch of
New Monuments, a project supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation through the museum’s Knight Art Commissions Program established in 2019. Open to artists living or working in Miami-Dade County, New Monuments invites project submissions that visualize a new, temporary monument atop a plinth in Collins Park. The Bass' curatorial team will select one artist each year for five years to create a work that will be on view for 10-12 months at a time. The first temporary monument will be installed around March 2021.

In 2020, we witness an international debate on monuments, reconsidering who they honor, their purpose and relevance and the validity of continued existence. What if we ponder the notion of impermanence and imagine a temporary monument dedicated to the present?

Building upon this context and engaging in current conversations, The Bass initiates a new program titled New Monuments by adding a fifth plinth to Collins Park and calling for artists to create a temporary new monument.

Treble Flow, by Regina Jestrow, repeats solid, opaque triangles within larger hexagonal patterns, referencing how sections of a quilt may be arranged and sewn together to compose a free-form grid.

Jestrow is inspired by scraps of fabric on the studio table, which, in her mind and in her hands, convey the possibilities of more expansive sculptural works.

Presented by Oolite Arts, Treble Flow can be viewed in person through the Walgreen's Windows at 6700 Collins Avenue and 7340 Collins Avenue.
