Innovative hybrid orchestra, Nu Deco Ensemble, announced their new EP, Nu Deco Ensemble + Cimafunk: Live in Miami. Released on October 9, the EP finds the genre-bending ensemble and noted AfroCubanFunk artist joining forces for an explosive live music experience combining funk, Afrobeat and orchestral sounds. “Collaborating with the incomparable Cimafunk was a phenomenal experience, as his talent and versatility have no boundaries,” shares Nu Deco Ensemble co-founder and artistic director, Sam Hyken. “This marks a continuation of our special relationship with the music and musicians of Cuba, and we are thrilled to share this special evening with the world as part of the Nu deco+ series.” Nu Deco Ensemble + Cimafunk: Live in Miami is the first installment of the Nu Deco Ensemble+ Series—an ongoing collection of archived recordings performed in various venues throughout South Florida including the North Beach Bandshell.

In late 2019, Nu Deco Ensemble released their self-titled debut album, produced in full by Kishi Bashi. The 8-song collection includes genre-bending collaborations, re-imaginings of artists such as Outkast and Daft Punk and new music by some of today’s most exciting living composers, including Nicholas Omicioli and Andy Akiho among others. The album is currently in the running for six GRAMMY Awards in categories such as Best Contemporary Instrumental Album; Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals; Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance; Best Contemporary Classical Composition; Producer of the Year, Non-Classical; and Best Pop Duo/Performance.

If you missed the online premiere of This Bitter Earth, the performance is still streaming on Miami City Ballet's YouTube Channel! This Bitter Earth, Christopher Wheeldon’s riveting and deeply moving pas de deux, is set to the gorgeously haunting music of Max Richter and Dinah Washington. Starring Emily Bromberg and Rainer Krenstetter, stick around for a post-performance interview with MCB Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez and dancers Emily Bromberg and Rainer Krenstetter.

This Bitter Earth was inspired by Dinah Washington's recording of the Clyde Otis song by the same title that reached #1 on the R&B Charts in July of 1960. Remixed by Max Richter, the song serves as the backdrop for this piece. Playlists of Dinah Washington's work and Max Richter's remixes were put together by Miami City Ballet to commemorate the program.
