Organize, Don’t Agonize

When Phillip Lacovara, former US Deputy Solicitor General, spoke to the Sanibel League of Women Voters and then to Floridians for Democracy, he challenged us to:

·        Renew our commitment to the fundamental principles of American democracy.

·        Strengthen our resolve actively to contribute to an atmosphere of respectful dialogue and persuasion at all levels.

·        Actively participate in political actions that have the potential for change, especially elections and connecting with political representatives.

FFDI Board Member and political consultant, Bob Schaeffer, updated listeners on Florida legislation that threatens democracy, including bills related to voting rights, book bans, and anti-protest measures. He reviewed his list of “worst bills” and urged us to contact our legislators immediately to vote 'no' on these bills. Both speakers underscored the importance of resistance and organizing at local and national levels to protect democratic institutions and values, calling us to engage in advocacy and support organizations working to preserve democratic freedoms.

What We Need to do Now

1. Contact your state senators and representatives by phone, by email, by letter to vote against all bills that reduce voting rights, civil rights and liberties, and undermine democratic principles and institutions.

Call your U.S> Senator to express your support for immigration reforms: Senator Scott at 202-224-5274 and Senator Moody at 202-224-3041.

2. Support the electoral process:

· Verify your own eligibility to vote.

· Encourage people of strong character to run for office at all levels of government.

· Volunteer as a poll worker or with voter registration drives.

3. Join community efforts to oppose ICE:

· Attend peaceful protest and solidarity rallies (link to FFD website Events pg).

· Donate food and clothing to families affected by ICE presence.

·Donate funds to local groups organizing opposition efforts.

4. Talk with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers about issues affecting our community. Carry out conversations that promote understanding.

5. Stay hopeful; engaged Americans will turn the tide back to democracy and the rule of law.
